Breast Milk vs. Cow Milk (WIC) ♥MichelleMo♥ 2 kids; Greeneville, Tennessee 2891 posts

When I was at WIC a few days ago, I was told to start introducing cow milk during meals to my 11 month old (12 on 1/17/13).. The thing is, he's been exclusively breastfed and shows no sign of stopping, and I have no intention of forcibly weaning him.. So- the cow milk is pointless, right? Why is WIC pushing it when they should be encouraging breastfeeding? I'm just trying to understand!
Also- YAY for nearly 1 yr of EBF! I barely made it 2 wks with baby #1..

We don't drink milk at all because I think it's pointless. So I would just contuine nursing and it's way more beneficial. Congrats on one year!

No, you don't need to start baby on cow's milk around 1 year. Go on breastfeeding if that's what you want.
A lot of the info I've seen that people have heard from WIC is pretty useless.

Ours was elated that I went to 13+ months breastfeeding. That sounds like that person's personal opinion more than anything else. Keep doing what you're doing

No on the cows milk! you are correct. I am at 14 months breastfeeding and I just use breast milk for his cereal.

I think they say that since most people want to wean at a year, but if you don't want to then I applauded you and also suggest doing what I do and using your human milk for times when you need some. Like for cereal

Yea with my first, i was struggling with BF and she was like either you're doing it or you're not because you either get this package or this one.. and forced me to choose... But when i was successful BFing #2 she was supportive.. but geeze... telling me to start at 11 (early!).. I flat out told her I wouldn't, but she just ignored me...

They told me I COULD introduce it at 12 mo, but he was a boober and hated cow milk, so I didn't bother til I was ready to wean. He drank a cup of choc milk (seriously small amt of choc) about maybe once a week from 18mo on, but didn't drink it more than that til I fully weaned him at 2.

Species specific.. I tell my husband he is better off drinking my milk than cow milk.. hahaha.. it's true, though. WIC is stupid.. I applied to be a BF Peer Counselor while I was there, hopefully I get the job so I can help the rest of those women!

Yeah, I'd ignore her and just keep bf'ing! They can't make you give him cow's milk

THanks, everyone! It makes my decision to ignore her easier for me to handle :) I don't even give my 3 year old milk to drink.. she only gets it with her cereal, so her telling me that blew my mind!

We only drink coconut, hemp or almond milk.
There is absolutely zero need for milk passed infancy... especially from another mammal.

Yea they got pissy at me when the doc had us supplementing A because she was loosing weight and then not even gaining 2 oz in a month and she was wayyyy off the curve. I was like umm I'm sure my doc knows more than you do.

Oh my baby might like that! I could mix it with breast milk! I bet he would love it.
