Quoting Emily Dickinson:" The article I just read said that alot of the Democrats are pissed becuase Obama conceded the limit ... [snip!] ... There was also a huge battle over the estate tax and the research and development tax but I can't see what was said about it."

i just want something that puts our country in better shape than today when we look at january of 2014.
Raising taxes on not slashing spending doesnt help get us moving in the right direction.

Well raising taxes and cutting programs is counterproductive. They need to figure out how to not spend so much money on unnecessary things. Like defense spending shouldn't be near what it is. And that' coming from a dual military family here.

I'm still going to have to ask them to lower my pay to get to a lower tax bracket. That sucks.

Well, I am a teacher. So I don't make crap. lol

But my husband owns his own trucking company and he, on paper, makes a great deal of money. However, when you deduct all that we spend to keep the truck running and whatnot, it isn't near as lucrative. Yet, because we are "independently owned," we pay upwards of 30% in taxes due to the IRS changes that were put in place in the 80s and never reformed.

We pay alot of money in each year and we are lucky to get maybe 10% of it back at tax time once we figure our deductions and credits.

I don't disagree with slashing spending. I just, however, feel that the spending cuts that most Republicans want to make would be detrimental to our future as a country. Cutting funding to education is never going to be okay to me as a teacher. We already do without so much in the classroom.

I feel ya on the 30%+. I own a business. I don't make nearly as much as a trucking company I'm positive, but paying my quarterly taxes blows.

I spend a ridiculous amount of my salary for my kids. I don't regret doing it because I will do whatever is necessary to allow them to meet their full potential but when you already don't make much, its hard to justify spending another 20% of your income on things that SHOULD be provided for you.

Exactly!! I think education should be the LAST thing to be cut. It should be funded before welfare and shit IMO. The school that DS goes to is so overcrowded too. They don't wanna spend the money to hire more teachers.

DS is in Kindergarten. There is 1 teacher to 29 students. I think that is f**king insane. And they don't have an aide or anything.

If a daycare can't have that kind of ratio, I don't think a school should!!

Its not that they don't want to but the state won't allow them too. We send our ratio numbers to the district and then the state each year and they allocate how many teachers can be in that specific building based on those numbers. Sometimes, they can hire more. Usually, they just tell us to "deal with it." I am teaching 25 right now and its actually pretty low for our district.

Technically, it is the state's responsibility to pay for education. The Fed, per the Constitution, shouldn't be putting a penny into it. Same for welfare, food stamps, Medicaid/Medicare, etc. Defense, postal service, and interstate travel should be the only things the fed spends money on. The other stuff is not covered in Article 8, Section 8 of the US Constitution. All the other fluff should be left to each individual state.

I really have no idea about the DETAILS about all of that. Just the basic idea. SD is a pooooooor state. So it's gonna be hard. I keep telling DH, f**k it. Lets move somewhere else.
