Burn the house down. No seriously, that shit will seep into the carpet and in the matting under it.

Do you have a carpet? Or what kind of floor?
Depending on the floor you might have to rip it out because it soaks in you cant really get rid of it.

Their urine is bad because the ammonia in it is really bad for you to breath in.

I don't know about getting rid of the smell but have you tried putting the litter box behind the couch? If that doesn't work, you for sure need to get rid of them or put them outside.

We actually don't have carpet. It's all wood.

well no sense telling you how bad that could end up etc.
getting a non ammonia based cleaner will really help you for starters
try putting down puppy pads just to help you keep clean up easier and keep from worsening the damage
keep the rest of your house clean
downsize on cats or train them to use the litterbox
try to help cover the smell with any oxy based cleaner or deodorizing spray
use lots of candles etc.
also if you can open lots of windows and doors and I know this may not go well but give your cats a real bath once you have everything cleaned
try a humidifier or air filter as well it will really help your baby and help you smell what they are talking about

Then it needs to be rip out and replaced. wood will absorb it and you can't get rid of it.

We can't put them outside, they'll run away. We're trying to get rid of them quickly. And, if we put the liter box behind the couch, they just kick the liter everywhere.

Ewwww, I can't imagine the dried piss that's under that.

Rip the floor up. Why did you wait until they said something to realize having cats piss behind the couch was not a good thing?

If you have carpet, you can try scrubbing it good with scrubbing bubbles and throwing some baking soda over the area but you have to keep up on it because the only permanent fix is going to be replacing the carpet and padding beneath it (and possibly even that section of the floor if it's wood.) For wood floors, I'm not too sure on a temporary fix. Try some vinegar or lemon juice, but the floor's gonna need to be replaced. For tile, you're gonna need a good grout cleaner.

Your basebords will probably need to be removed and replaced as well.

I didn't wait. We've been cleaning it and cleaning it and they still go back there. I've just never recognized the smell.

Most def get rid of the cats. what is more important? losing a child bc of un sanitary conditions or cats? I had a neighbor who had cats & that was one of the most horrible stenches i have ever smell. Take the cats to the humiane society.

They'll run away? Good riddance.
