A push to talk device. He would push a button and then it would speak the picture, gesture whatever. So he has more of a way to communicate with others.

Yeah, I don't plan on actively trying to get him to sign when he's young, but when I say anything I plan to sign it as well since I'm doing that for DS1 anyway. If he picks them up and starts using them on his own that's awesome. If not I won't try to get him to unless he's speech delayed as well. Not having very much support is difficult but I shrug it off and let people know I don't give a damn about their opinions. My sister and I are no longer talking because of that. She's 20, never lived on her own, never been around any child, let alone my child. She's met him twice and both times he was under 3 months old. She's only had one job her whole life and it was for 2 months. She tried to tell me how to raise him a couple weeks ago. I need to be doing this and that and I'm going to "f**k him up" and make him think there's something wrong with him all because I let him be in therapy and I seek his doctor's advice about how to discipline him since he is different than any of the other kids I've ever dealt with and I don't assume I know what I'm doing because I don't. Apparently, in the eyes of someone who has never even been around my kid that makes me a bad parent so I told her to go f**k herself and grow up and blocked her on facebook. The best part was "I know what I'm talking about, I've been reading stuff online." She lives 9 hours away so facebook was the only way we had to communicate. If my dad happens to come down to meet DS2 when he's here she'll just have to be informed that since she already knows so much about my kids she doesn't need to see them.

If she had been reading so much online she would have real information. Sounds like she's talking out her butt.

And I have issues with my aunt for same reasons. But she's old and thinks he is mentally retarded because he can't talk. He has a motor planning problem and is very bright. Actually advanced in cognitive ability, etc.

:( I feel like MIL thinks people will think DS is retarded because he doesn't talk and that's why she's so sensitive about it. DS is also very advanced in other areas. At 15 months he was past the 2 year mark for problem solving and gross motor skills and past the 18 month mark for fine motor skills, but he was at the 10 month mark for social and communication. He's very, VERY bright and you can tell by watching him. You can almost see the little gears in his head turning all the time, everything he looks at. I just wish he would speak up with that brilliance :) A lot of people don't know this but some of the most intelligent people in history had speech delays and issues. Albert Einstein didn't say anything at all until he was 3. Sometimes his therapist tells us little tidbits like that haha.

It is interesting to find info like Einstein.

Your MIL will probably come around. Maybe not for a while, but she might. Don't give up hope. She'll see him for who he is eventually :D
