Quoting Taryn - Anya's mommy:" Thank you and unfortunately yes he did. I just wish he would have talked to someone. The reason we see ... [snip!] ... Thankfully the way he did it, was a calm scene......he did it by asphyxiation by helium, it was just like he went to sleep."

Talking to someone doesn't always help though. I was taking handfuls of pills while I was on the phone with a friend. My situation was much different, but I couldn't see getting angry at someone for doing what they felt they needed to do to get rid of the pain.

I feel like when people are in a situation where they're thinking of committing suicide, they're not in a viable mindset to understand whether or not they're being selfish, so my opinion there is neutral.
I have tried to kill myself SEVERAL times and only a few times did I willingly seek medical attention to prevent death, just because I snapped out of it. I spent years being treated AND medicated as manic depressive bipolar, schizoeffective disorder, schizophrenia, just random bullshit that they would throw a pill at. Come to find out, I have Borderline Personality Disorder and it's completely manageable with therapy and WITHOUT medication.
Had I been diagnosed properly and not put on medication that made my situation worse, I probably wouldn't have as many suicide attempts on my record as I do.

From a mentally healthy outsider's perspective, yes, it is very selfish.

From a person's perspective who is struggling with depression and thinks the world would be much better off without them, no, it's actually selfless in their mind.

Do you believe it's selfish when someone commits suicide?
Yes and no.

If yes, have you ever tried to kill yourself, or do you know someone that did?
My father killed himself and my mother always threatens it.

Do you think if someone didn't succeed in killing themselves they didn't really want to die?
It depends.

If you've tried to kill yourself, do you have a mental illness?
No, but I'm sure I have a mental illness of some sort.

I agree. I don't think anyone has the right to be angry at someone for it. Yes, it sucks for those left behind. Yes, it hurts. But you have to realize that they weren't thinking clearly. It wasn't about us (they left us, they didn't care, etc). It was about them. They just needed the pain to end.

Technically it is selfish but i dont judge them for it. I thought about suicide alot when i was a tween-teen. I was being abused by a family member and suffered from depression. In my mind at the time no one could possibly understand what i was going through and no one would believe me. To me, suicide was the only way out and to stop the pain.
I now know suicide is wrong but i can undertand why someone who is going through certain situations can do it

Disagree. I believe that I have every right to be angry with my father. Not because he wanted the pain to end, but because he left me behind, because he never got to see his first grandchild, because he is missing out on so much. Anger is a normal part of the grieving process. He was selfish, I am selfish, that is just the way it works.

Yeah I was off my meds for a few days, and all of a sudden, it just wasn't me anymore. It was almost like I wanted to stop, but couldn't. I don't know if that makes sense, but hearing about my boss saying it's selfish right after she found out I was inpatient, rubbed me the wrong way.

No I don't think its selfish. I've had 14 suicide attempts in the past and suicidal thoughts at least once a day. Its a mental illness, not something I'm doing to be selfish.

I've been this way as long as I can remember ... suicide and suicidal ideations are just a part of my daily routine.

I have Borderline Personality Disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, and I'm a recovering hoarder. I honestly couldn't tell you where it all stems from.
