Quoting loser mom:" Because students missing so much class puts a burden on teachers and other students. I could give you ... [snip!] ... need to miss school when every Tom, Jane and Dick in your family gets ill? I think you're looking for excuses to be absent. "

When you are vomiting your guts up every five minutes you probably shouldn't be going to school. Unless you are one of those idiotic parents that sends them to school anyway to get everyone else sick when the vomit in the middle of the classroom. When he get sick he gets SICK... Like you don't even know.

Because it makes a big difference for the other students and teachers. It puts a teacher back weeks to get someone caught up when they are gone so often. It's not a simple as you seem to think it is.

It is ridiculous nowadays! At my son's school an absence only counts as excused if he's sick. The first 2 weeks of this year I got really sick and was in and out of the hospital a few times, so of course he missed school a few days. They told my husband they are unexcused absences even though he went to explain the situation. Now I'm just hoping they don't try to press charges on us sometime during the year over it... :?

Why would he miss school because you're sick?

lol.. maybe I'm just super strict or something, but for me... there's very few reasons why a child shouldn't be at school.

Because I'm the only one home at that time to take him to school. He hasn't missed aside from those 2 days so I didn't really see a huge problem with it.

Well, I'd have to agree with the school. Those really aren't excused absences.

Correct, and she did take him on the days I was not around. He missed the first 2 days I was home alone with them. My parents work 4am-2pm and my husband was doing his calworks activities from 8am-4pm. My son starts school at 10am so no one else was home at those times.

It's bull and I'll tell you why:

Every child that attends class each day is making money for the school. They get paid for daily attendance. Your brother is making them lose money and they HATE that. No matter if "charges" stick or not, YOU (your family) is being made to defend themselves and they are (I'm sure) making you think you* are doing some disservice by your brother by him missing.

I LOATHE public schools. Homeschool FTW.

Public schools have WAAAAAAAy too much control!

Quoting Raindancer:" Do you think that it is unfair for schools to charge a student with truancy for being sick and going ... [snip!] ... their kids are skipping out on school. They should just charge the child and make them do like community service or something."

If a kid is skipping just because they hate school... they need to not have the school penalized after the legal drop out age. If they are skipping because school sucks to them, well I firmly believe schools should be more interesting so kids WANT to go to school. A kid skipped my class ONCE and felt bad because she knew she let me down, she never did after that. I did teach in a school where kids weren't required to go to class, even though it was "middle school" (it's a weird program, I can explain if needed). Schools need to be fun, not boring "Okay kids lets fill in the bubbles on these worksheets!" type shit.

I graduated late because my school were complete dicks when I was sick. I had mono and got it really bad. My doc did NOT want me going to school, I slept all the time and they didn't want me around other people and get sicker. So my school sent work home for me to do. I'm a good student when I put my head to it and I didn't need teachers help. My Mom helped me with Math that I was shaky on. Well, to put a long story short, I was out of school 1/2 of the year. I got sick in the middle of the first semester and didn't come back until the middle of the second. I did my work... I went to classes occasionally when I had good days but I mainly stayed home. My school kept a file with my work... they LOST all of it. So when I came in to take my finals, guess what... I had NO proof I did work because we didn't think I'd have to make actual copies of every single thing I turned in. They basically were all "Oh well, she fails." I failed all my classes because my school lost my work. We had lawyers involved and the school came back with "Well if she was REALLY that sick she would be in the hospital." The school nurse INSISTED I didn't really have mono and if I did, it was a slight case. She said "She's not even contagious, she needs to be in school." Yet, my doctor said over and over I was too susceptible to germs and needed to stay home. Needed to sleep if I wanted. But oh no, that bitch decided that I was faking it all! So I failed, my lawyers couldnt do shit and we were going to press further but I decided that while they are dicks I loved my school. But having to do classes over that I already passed (Seriously all my grades were great, they graded my work but kept it in a file. They fucking lost it. NOT my fault. So the next year I fucked up in school more because I was a sophomore taking freshman classes. I was highly involved in school but didnt care about classes themselves because I did work I hated.

We had a meeting with my JROTC sergeants and they said "Come on, you are smarter than this, don't fail more classes. We know it was out of your hands, but don't make this be your fault." So I got my shit together and passed. I didn't have GREAT grades but I did well. Then the last year when it dawned on me that I am not graduating with my class because of my schools mess up. So I started to fail again, and my band teacher and JROTC leaders once again told me to wise up. I then got all straight A's, but man... playing in the band during the graduation ceremony I was supposed to be in... that was hard.

It kicked my ass into gear though.

In the end, schools need to be more interesting, more enticing. Kids should have a curriculum which makes them WANT to go to school. I do believe every kid should get their diploma, not their GED, at the minimum. But there are alternative schools and alternative teaching available to help kids want to go to school... it's sad more schools dont implement such characteristics of education.

My sister also had severe mono and was jaundiced and her school LOST her doctor's note. They called my mom and said she had to get another one so she.went to the school and stood over the attendance secratary's desk while she went through.every scrap of paper she had and found it. My mom pulled her out of that school later that year.

So a student misses a day of school and suddenly they are put back weeks.. Oh yeah. I believe that.
