Is this normal? Christan_89 2 kids; Grapevine, Texas 8043 posts

I posted about this last night, but no one responded, so here I go again:

I'm 38 weeks and I have these horrible waves of pain where it feels like my kidneys are going to explode, or something. My doctor and I are both pretty sure that this baby is posterior, I just want to make sure this is normal for what back labor feels like and that it's not more likely that I have a kidney infection or something. It doesn't hurt when I pee.

I don't know if it's normal for your pregnancy situation or not, but I've had bad kidney infections in the past while not pregnant. In addition to my kidney area being soooo sore (like it hurt to breathe), my pee was kinda cloudy looking and I had to go a lot. It never hurt me to pee though.

I never had back labor so I can't help you there but honestly the only one who can answer this is your doctor. If you are having any severe pain, I recommend going in and getting it checked out. Better safe than sorry.

I've never had back labor, so I'm not sure about that. But it is possible to have a kidney infection without having painful urination (you would likely have a fever), or kidney stones... Hope it's not that. A quick urine test would tell you; I don't know what your insurance is like.

No fever. My doctor checked my pee at my last appointment, but I'm not sure if they check for infection unless you ask them to... she said "your urine looks great", but I think she was referring to the fact that it didn't have any protein in it. (I had Pre-e with my son) Hmmm. Maybe I'll just go to my PCP on Monday... If it were an infection, would the pain be constant, though, as opposed to coming and going?

I had that pain at the end of both of my pregnancies. They did ultrasounds and it showed that the baby was pushing on my ureters (tubes from kidneys to the bladder). It felt like waves of being hit in the back with a baseball bat.

It went away as soon as I delivered. It's actually really common.

Hang in there mamma :)!

Even though it sucks horribly, that's good to hear. It was so bad last night that I was almost in tears... but then it would go away. I thought about going to L&D but I knew it wasn't labor and didn't want to spend the money unless it didn't stop.

Not necessarily. Kidney stones cause pain that comes and goes, too. It's probably not, but I'd get checked just in case. Is it just pain in your kidneys, or is it across your back? Is there tightening with it? Are the waves regular, or sort of regular, or just all over the place?
