Just be like, "Hey... my friend has no plans for today and was wondering if she could spend it with us. If not it's totally cool, just wanted to check with you first."

i don't want them to feel they have to say yes and they're the type that would feel rude if they said no. would you still ask? would you offer to help with dinner, like buying it and/or cooking?

Yes. Because since you're friend is coming over, more food will have to be made. Just say you all can play games and hang out as more of a group thing. It's always more fun having a few more people over.
