How long can they go? *Mommy to four little Mon Due May 28; 3 kids; 1 angel baby; Kitchener, Ontario 8595 posts

I made a post yesterday about my daughter being sick. She has not eaten in almost 7 days. She won't drink or eat. She has a Popsicle here or there when she feels like it. We took her to the doctor and they said there is no need for concern right now. Well she isn't getting any nutrients. And she is on amoxicillin. So how long can a toddler go without eating. She is already tiny now she looks like skin and bones. It's gross. I don't know what to do.
Also how can I tell I she is dehydrated? I am at a loss. I am at my whits end. She keeps having diarrhea and saying her stomach hurts so bad and no one will help us. We sat in the ER for seven hours for them to give us Imodium and tell us to give her Tylenol.
Help!!

I wish I had some good advice, but I'm sending good vibes your way. Hope she's feeling better soon. <3
The biggest thing is pushing fluids If she gets dehydrated, take her back to the ER, or to another ER.
Symptoms of dehydration are decreased urine output and decreased thirst, parched looking lips, sunken eyes, dry mouth, dark and especially smelly urine, muscle cramps, light-headedness and trouble with motor skills, confusion, etc.
Wishing you the best!

Thank you. I appreciate that. I just wish she felt better or I could feel what she felt so I knew what to do for her.

Jen she needs medical care. Whoever told you that.she is fine with not eating or drinking and having diarhea for.seven days is a quack that should have his license revoked. Take her somewhere else asap. If shes barely taking liquids she must be dehydrated and kids can lose a dangerous amount of weight quickly. All of that aside, they need to.figure out why she has had diarhea for so long. Thats not normal.at all. Prayers!

Thanks Mel. I forced her to take 50 ml of pedialite and a rainbow Popsicle. I was just glad she was taking in liquids. I agree something is not ok. Maybe something will show in her labs. I just pray its nothing serious.
I am watching her like a hawk. If she stops drinking or has more diarrhea which has subsided for now then I will take her to a different hospital.

That sounds like a good plan. Hopefully she is getting better on her own.

As long as they get some liquids in, dont matter what kind of liquids either just something, they can a while witout eating anything or much at all.

My dd suffers from massive on going UTI's and when she has one she stops eating, her last major infection she didnt eat for 14 days, and barely drank anything but gingerale. She lost some weight and saw the dr every 2 days. She never got dehydrated at all, so they never did fluids (at that time) she has gotten them in the past tho. Amoxillian (sp?) is a good med and usually you see a difference in eatng and drinking habbits within 48 hrs, if it has been longer then that the lo been on it I would go back to see the dr who gave it. You may need a stronger med.
Or if lo has been on amoxillian before and not that long ago she would need something new, its one of those meds that shouldnt be given too close together or it dont work...kwim?

Hope lo feels better soon.
