Is it necessary to get one, or will we be fine doing baths in the sink?
I used one a lot the first few months. Until they can sit up or roll out of it in protest. It was just easier for me. Once mine were sitting up, we went to only the sink. We just have a cheapie. I think it was something like $12 or $13 almost 4 years ago.
I never bought one. I had this foam thing so her head wasn't on such a terrible hard surface but that's it.
We got one as a gift. I swear I only used it a few times. When my kids were really little it was easier to give them sponge baths or to co-bathe. When they could sit up on their own they took baths in the big tub.
I only ever used a bath sponge with my kids. I want the baby bath bloom!

My best friend has the bath bloom, and even in her big kitchen sink, it was too big. The baby was so cramped, she maybe used it for a month. After that it was a nice tummy time mat though.
OP, we had a cheap baby bath and used it for a few months, then went to the kitchen sink once he could sit up.
I used one of the cheap pink baby tubs from walmart. We used it a lot, every bath time until she could sit up on her own then we moved her to the tub with a seat. We would just fill it up and bathe her on the floor in the bathroom or kitchen. Our sink is too small and the faucet always scared me.
Like this as a newborn:
Then without net as she got bigger/could support her head better:
Both of those pictures are in the living room, thats where daddy gave her a bath all the time. lol Ruins the floor. It was a really handy tub though.
