I keep seeing people on here say not to go to the ER because of the germs and illnesses that are there. Wouldn't it be the same at the doctors? Sick people go to both so why is the ER different? Just curious lol.

You spend a heck of a lot longer in the ER typically...so more time to be exposed I suppose.

I think a lot more people go in and out of the ER than a doctors office, and often times the people going to the ER are a lot more sick. People in the doctors office are often there for check ups, shots, something silly like a sore throat or a mild cough. The babies with RSV and whooping cough are rushing to the ER.

Also, for other reasons I would avoid the ER. The ER is for emergencies. The more people that are waiting there, the longer it takes for others to be seen. Save the ER for true emergencies.

I get that the ER is for emergencies and that is a valid reason to go to the dr instead for a cough. It just seems like saying there are more germs there doesn't make sense because lots of sick people go to the dr so there would be germs there also.

More really sick people go to the ER and sit there for long amounts of time. I sit in the doctors waiting room for less than 15 min & I don't touch anything & if I do I sanitize.

while sick people go to the doctor not as many do. Plenty of people there for check ups or other non contagious reasons.

The ER here pisses me off. They wouldn't let my daughter go back with me because supposedly more germs are in the back...but the way I see it is, the people who are sick in the back were waiting in the front first probably for a good amount of time & they don't sanitize the waiting room nearly as much as they do in the back...plus there are curtains & stuff between people so it isn't like you are right on top of everyone in the back.

But there are non contagious people at the ER also. Not everyone that goes there is sick. I don't get why people don't just say the ER is for emergencies and not don't go because there's to many illnesses there lol.

Well its a combo of both like everyone else has said. The length of time you are exposed and such plays a factor. Plus if you are talking children a lot of pedis have a well child entrance and a sick child entrance to keep them apart.

People who don't have health insurance use the ER like a doctors office because ER's can't turn people away.

I think doctors offices have more germs IMO.

Kids are filled with germs and put everything in their mouth.

Working in the er, the rooms are constantly disinfected and house keeping in there all the time.
