Last weekend my toddler (18mo) woke up and she was really stiff. We sat her down for breakfast after she had a glass of water and we changed her diaper. We sat her down in a high chair and she kept zoning out. She would just stare into space and not move a muscle then her feet started to spasm. Her hands started doing it too the next time it happened (about 5 minutes later). This happened 4 times. I called the pedi and they said it could be normal upon waking. Yesterday, the same thing happened. Today, she is being very clingy and didn't let me put her down until she fell asleep. She was sitting on my lap and kept going really stiff but didn't shake. A few minutes later her legs got stiff and one foot started to spasm again. She was breathing really fast and her head was moving too (not jerking, but wobbly like an infant)... her left hand and foot had spasms before it stopped. She was spacing out this time too. Then she was fine and fell asleep in my arms a few minutes later. Could this be caused by being tired? This is not normally her nap time, but she has been sleepy since she woke up, even after she slept in 2 hours past her normal wake up time. Her father suffered seizures as a child, but I'm not sure what kind they were - they stopped between age 8 and 10 for him and started at age two. I called the pedi again and they said a nurse will call me back at the end of the day.
That sounds like possibly siezure activity or something neurological. I'd call her pedi again and demand an appointment. Then I'd ask for a referral to a pediatric neurologist.

Next time it happens I would call 911.
Okay, I'll call back. The ER here is terrible. We have to drive her 2.5 hours one way to her specialist appointments for asthma.
She is fine before and after they happen.. just spaces out for a few seconds then is back to her normal self. I'm on hold right now. What tests will be done?
Petit mal seizures is what SO had... are these hereditary? I'm on hold still
