Gay marriage: a civil rights issue? Minion Due September 30 (girl); 2 kids; ., GA, United States 21455 posts

I saw on FB today a picture of Martin Luther King Jr's daughter that was quoting he saying, "my father didnt get shot so homosexuals can get married. Gay marriage is not a civil rights issue."
I don't know how true the quote is, and to be honest I didn't even know MLKJ even had a daughter until now, but what do you think? Is gay marriage a civil rights issue?
What do you think of the quote?

i beliebe her father would be very disappointed in her if she said that.

Civil rights are the natural burn rights of humans.

Black, gay, female, etc.

No one attributes Martin Luther king jr to gay rights, nor women's rights. He was a moving man in the world if civil rights. But not the ONLY one, not was his the only civil rights issue.

Of course it is.

I have no idea what MLK's views on homosexuality were, he was obviously deeply religious so perhaps was against it, but I'm sure he would support the movement for gay marriage as he understands the persecution and how it feels to have fewer rights than others.

If his daughter did say that, she's a f**king idiot and has no idea what civil rights are. Civil rights =/= only black rights.

she is the odd one of her siblings. her mother worked after MLKJs death, in his name, helping homosexuals and transgenders.
and MLK had two daughters and two sons I believe. :)

He didnt express his views publically often from what I remember (I did a huge report on him and his family when I was in a speech class last quarter). but he did work with homosexuals often, even when his advisors told him not to associate with them, he basically told them to screw off.
but publicly, he didnt denounce nor promote homosexual rights.
from what his wife said after his death though, he was just in favor of LGBT rights as he was racial rights.

What the f**k.
Ok he may have not died defending or supporting gays but how is gay marriage not a civil rights issue?
Martin Luther King fought for the African Americans to have the same rights as Whites therefore leading to the movement of no discrimination because of race/color. Part of the definition of civil rights is protection from discrimination and IMO Gays and lesbians are being descriminated against by not being able to have the same privileges as a straight couple do.

OP which daughter was it? it has a daughter who became a pastor or something like that, and one that became a civil rights advocate working at places dedicated to her father, brought up by Corretta King.
I dont remember which was which, but I will look up the name if you have one.

I thought it was the rev. daughter.
I think I remember reading about this, but because I didnt include it in my speech I didnt remember it too well.
Glad she had a turnaround in her beliefs though.

Redefining marriage is the issue and it's not about "civil rights".

No. Treating gays like they're human is what were trying to accomplish. That's a civil rights issue.
