So we need to buy tickets to Alaska like now...and we have enough mileage to cover one ticket (mine)...I really wanted to put my son ( 16 months) in his carseat in his own seat.....but that's another 600$ ( one ticket) and that is ALOT of money for us...I can technically hold him on my lap but I have a feeling it will be very difficult and I am scared for his safety.

Thoughts?

Eta- It would be a connecting flight sooo 4 hours to Seattle and 3 hours to Anchorage. Also is it even possible to use his carseat as a carry on?

DH and I flew to Colorado for a wedding when Isaiah was a little over a year and a half. We had planned to buy him a ticket for an extra seat, but it just wasn't in our budget. We took turns holding him on the flight, and he was perfectly happy. As far as safety, I didn't have an issue with any turbulence or anything of that nature, so all I can say is that the flight went smoothly for us.

How long was your flight? Ours will be 4 hours then connects to another 3 hours

If it were me, I would not buy him a $600 ticket. You can take your car seat to the gate (it is not considered a carry on so you can still bring your own carry on). If there is an extra seat available they may let you use it for free, I was able to do this on one flight, and if not, then you can gate check it and pick it up as soon as you get off the plane. Honestly, don't worry about the safety part. I mean, if the plane goes down, you're all screwed. It's going to suck really bad not having him in his car seat but $600 is a lot of money. I've only ever flown to CO and back and it's only a 90 min flight. We go at least twice a year. Now that he is 3 and I have to buy him a seat, I use the car seat just for my convience.

Between our two flights, it was about 5 hours.
