I have been a smoker for almost 9 years. I used to smoke menthol but they started hurting my throat so I switched to full flavor. In December I started coughing up blood. I have cut down a lot (I was smoking a pack a day now I smoke about 5 cigarettes a day) thinking maybe if I cut down I would stop coughing up blood. Well it has gotten a little better but not much. My grandfather was a smoker and had lung cancer. He has been in remission for about 10 years now. I know I should go to the Dr but im scared what they will tell me. I know its a good possibility something is wrong but the irrational side of me keeps saying if I quit it will go away. Which is not true... Im terrified... And I am quitting.I am cutting back slowly until I no longer smoke. I watched my grandpa suffer for years trying to beat cancer and I dont want to go through that or have my kids and DH watch me go through that... Ugh... Im so scared.... Any words of encouragement would be great..

I think it's amazing that you've cut back so far! With willpower like that, I have absolutely no doubt you can be smoke free someday soon!

And, honestly, I have no words for the doctor that won't sound rude without me meaning to :( you know you need to go, so I will leave it at that

well you are very young, hopefully it is just burst blood vessels in your lung from coughing so much..go to the doctor, get checked out. for your babies sake and your future child, i encourage you to continue on the path to quitting..if you can go down to 3 cigs a day for the following week and then go down to 2 the next week and then 1 the following week, and then 1/2 the next week and then none! how great would you feel if you were able to quit in the next month! =]

Very ill? Coughing up blood seems pretty ill to me. Not to mention loss of apitite, no energy, wheezing. I cough up about a quarter size of blood every time.

:!: So the only thing I can think it would've been is an irritated throat.

Quitting is hard, OP. I smoke Camel Menthol... so not only is it a menthol, it also has the crush in the filter. They're rough, and I enjoy the burn on my throat which is so awful  But, you CAN quit if you want to. Keep your hands/mind busy so that you don't get bored and want one (that's my biggest problem).

Those are side effects of smoking in general. Not cancer. And even then, feeling any fatigue or loss of appetite if you have cancer isn't from cancer itself... it's from the radiation therapy.

I know but why has it been getting progressively worse (minus the coughing blood)? Do you think quitting will solve the problem or should I go to the Dr as well?

I quit 2 years ago using Chantix. That stuff is awesome. You can do it you just gotta put your mind to it and you really need to go to the doctor. Good luck!!
