Quoting Draco'sStalker:" When i say "that's retarded" it's usually that it slipped out. the only reason i watch who i say it around ... [snip!] ... a nice word to call people. that it was insinuated as derogatory. most of the time i use it in place of something being dumb."

In some cases I would have to use it as saying a student has "mental retardation" so for my lifestyle/career I do come across the word, therefore I think thats why I would NEVER use the word because there is a textbook usage for it, and then there is a usage people say as an insult. Of which, I only say one for diagnosis standards.

Knowing I hurt my friend is why I call people out. My recent ex would say "That's gay" and he wouldn't even really be saying anything mean and I'd just point at him and he'd correct himself. Then he would correct himself before I said anything knowing I didn't like it. My Mom said it with "that's retarded" too, she slips at times and says "I'm sorry I know you don't like it." I don't b***h people out but I do say that it hurts people.

My daughter actually said something really cute the other day. She said "My friend said 'that's gay' at school. I said it wasn't nice and he shouldn't say things like that. I mean, there IS such a thing as saying gay meaning you are happy, but he didn't mean it in that way. So his statement wasn't very nice and I needed to tell him he should choose a different word." I swear to God... she's a little Grandma in a 9 year olds body! lol She said her friends didn't know "gay" means happy, then they discussed better words to use. Then they finished their desert and went on the swings.

3rd graders... they rock! lol

That word enrages me like no other... I hate saying it even when reading books to students and it's in the freaking book. I tell my students they can skip over words like that (the N word I skip over too) Damn those words seriously piss me off.

Omg your daughter sounds so adorable :D

It makes me so happy that its becoming less popular to be prejudice against gay people in school....I remember in elementary/middle school my brother being afraid to have friends come over and it hurting my Dads feelings. By the time I was in HS tho my Dad was so surprised at how many openly gay kids I knew.

I have a lesbian sister and I am EXTREMELY pro GLBT rights before I even met my sister. My children would have the unholy wrath of my ass on their ass if they were against any GLBT person ;)

But Lily is pretty awesome. That kid cracks me up, the things she says I'm just like "Really, where the hell did you come from?" Ranging from telling me our dog came down from Heaven to take my friend to Heaven when he passed away *Lily was 3 and I was curled up in a ball crying on the couch and Lily said she saw our dog and my friend go up to Heaven* right down to making me crack up at things like getting a crappily made "Happy Meal" thing from Sonic and she quipped "Well that wasn't much of a Happy Meal, more like a crappy meal..." right down to also earning her allowance and seeing a bum and wanting to give it to that person because the sign says he needs food.

So yup... I have an awesome child. I love that little monster, and I AM glad that she is so accepting of others and seems to have accepting friends too. Some of her friends have parents which seem to not accept me, but eh... oh well. I just tell Lily that I don't care who her friends are, but if her friends downgrade others for who they love or who they are, she should reevaluate those friendships. She keeps a pretty good group of friends and we keep having the talk of "Well what if your friends told you not to be friends with so and so because they were gay/jewish/asian/poor/etc... and she always says the right thing, which I'm glad. Some of my friends growing up weren't that way... one of my friends from girl scouts regularly told me I was going to hell because I was jewish. Yeeeps!

DH and i have agreed that after teaching her acceptance and to not judge others, that if we ever caught OUR Lily being a bully in any way for any thing, we'd wail her ass for her. we have a no tolerance policy there. whether its for sexual orientation, differently able or for as simple as how they look, believe, or race she will be raised better than that.

Sounds like you are raising a pretty awesome kid :D!

I don't care for that word, either. I actually have not heard fag/f****t in a long time.

I felt horrible when my gay cousin came to visit because DS (I swear I am not making this up!) says what sounds like "fuckin' gay" or "f**k a gay", but he is actually saying motorcycle/bike. I know that sounds so far out there, but I swear that's what he says. He started saying it a few months ago and my friend asked me if he was saying "fuckin' gay", so I got on my husband's ass about it. Turns out he'd say it every time he'd see a bike or motorcycle so we'd yell "BIKE! IT'S A BIKE!" lol.

He also says dark funny, like dyke. We sound like a bunch of bigots over here lol.

Thankfully my cousin didn't take offense and realized that he was actually trying to say bike.

Haha that's so weird! N always sounds like his mouth is full....but he knows alot of words.....He started saying Oh shit....but we got him to turn it into "what's that" instead :].

We just stopped saying motorcycle and say bike instead, it's lessened since. When DS started saying fire truck it came out "fire f**k", lmao. DS started saying shit a while back so we'd say "Did you mean sit? You want to sit down?" and now he no longer says it, lol.

DH and I both have horrible mouths and I've definitely cleaned mine up a lot, but DH slips a lot still. More so when he comes home after a long job, he works with vulgar men and I guess it rubs off.
