My son has been in trouble in school a lot the last couple weeks. And I told him the beginning of this week, that he needs to be good to hand out the invites. Well, he has gotten in trouble both yesterday and today, and he has detention friday. He has his birthday party planned for saturday. I have told him that if he didnt act right at school, then I would cancel it. BTW he will be turning 6. I just want to make sure that Im doing the right thing.

If you said you were going to cancel it, then cancel it. You have to follow through.

I wouldn't have used the party as a threat, but since you already did, i would stick to it. I'd still celebrate his birthday, but just with family.

:!: I would have taken away something else. Toys, games, tv, etc.

I wouldn't have threatened with a birthday party. I mean, a once a year celebration just doesn't seem fair. I would have dished out punishment that day and added to the next day. It's only Tuesday. Is there any extra chores he can do today? Privileges you can take away? Something he would really hate.

A birthday is pretty important. Maybe tell him he can't have it until he's good and make it the following weekend?

Never threaten something you can't or won't follow through with. If you give in on this, he will think you would give in every time and he won't truly learn his lesson.

This, or maybe since it's a once a year thing make a list of things that he would have to do to earn his party back.

It sucks so much that you would use his birthday party as punishment, but since you did i feel like you have to cancel it..

but what a shitty shitty punishment for a 6 year old, poor guy.

I would think that taking away stuff isnt working, try positive things.

Doe he have chores? Make him take out the recycle, garbage if it's not too full. Take away toys, leave him with a few of one thing- cars, crayons, one color book. It sounds like he got in big trouble to be in detention for kindergarten or first grade.
