Low Iron levels...constipation Mommy2Kay Due April 20; 1 child; Florida 4230 posts

I went to donate blood today and my iron levels were 11.5 the first time she tested it but when she did it again (just a few min later) it was 12.6. I barely passed it since if it was 12.5 or lower I wouldn't have been able to donate.

She told me to start taking iron supplement but I have been soo constipated lately that I'm scared of taking iron and making it worse. I have been constipated for weeks! I changed my diet, added more greens and things with fiber and it's not really helping. What should I do? Another thing, I started eating yogurt daily to try to help my body fight yeast infections since I have been getting them monthly or every other month but my stomach is soo bloated, Idk what to do. Has any of you ladies experienced constipation with lactose intolerance?

I'm not, I lost a lot of blood with my last period, I think that might have caused it because I have been feeling really tired and weak after that. I had anemia when I was pregnant and it continued for 2 more years after that.

I've been dealing with consitipation for several years.
I can add TONS of fiber to my diet but it does no good if I eat the things that I know make me constipated.... and they are common culprits for those prone to constipation:
- bananas, rice, some cheese, applesauce
The above makes LOTS of people constipated. For me, almost all dairy makes me constipated. Cottage cheese and yogurt are no-nos for me.

If your iron is low, focus on eating more meat and, on days that you aren't constipated MAYBE take a vitamin with some iron. If you just take one once or twice a week it will help.

Also, when things are bad for me, I take Colace (or the generic) and miralax with my coffee. they both really help.

Low iron isn't an indication of pregnancy, lol

Have you tried adding benifiber to your meals? Ive been on and off anemic for years and whenever I need to supplement with iron I always stock pile that and add it to everything, lol

You really need to get on iron tablets hun. I had anaemia after my last pregnancy and my periods just got heavier and heavier. Apparently the more anaemic you get, the worse your period becomes, which in turn makes you more anaemic. maybe the doctor could prescribe a good laxative to use at the same time, to help with the constipation?x

Crap! This has to be it then...all the yogurt I have been eating it making it worse. I am bloated and my stomach is tender at times from all the gas in there that won't come out and (this is TMI BTW lol) but I'm getting hemorrhoids and tears :?
