The government should not recognize any marriage... Devil's Advocate Beverly Hills, California 18191 posts

Because marriage was initially a church thing and based on separation of church and state, it should not be recognized at all.

What do you think of this opinion? My English instructor told me that a guy in a previous class wrote a paper about this. I find it interesting.

Marriage doesn't have to be a religious relationship.

I was recently told (not sure if it's true) that they only started doing marriage licenses to stop interracial marriages.

The Liberals are fighting over it on Being Liberal on facebook. It's funny to read their arguments :)

It was originally a religious institution. That is the point.

Uhhh marriage was not a church thing. What if you wereen't christian? This is not a christian country, at one time we were primarily christian, but not all, and we definitely are NOT now.

I agree. It should be a legal partnership, not a marriage. I'd explain better but I'm nursing a jumping bean and typing one handed

initially religious? hmm. I'm not sure I'm buying that. Marriages have been recorded from the beginning of history.

K, try to stay with me. Marriage is in the bible as an institution. I'm talking WAYYY before. If this is so, the argument was that due to separation of church and state, the government should not recognize marriage whether it be gay or straight.

It was just an interesting argument for gay marriage. That's it.

I mean, things change, and making laws for now based on what something has been used for in the past is silly.

Modern society, modern marriage, modern laws.

Marriages have been in many cultures. Not just Christian.
