Even if you buy the cloth, you still don't change the cover each diaper change. I reuse the cover A LOT. I will take off her current g, put it to the side, wipe her, put on her new g (one that's already completely ready to go), snap off the liner of the used g, put the cloth in the wet pail, put the pouch in the mesh bag (I remove the pouches during laundry, so it's easier if they're already separated in the mesh bag), and if the cover is untouched, I snap in a new pouch with cloth (which I already have prepped and ready to go), and put the fresh diaper with all her other fresh diapers. This cuts back on laundry SUBSTANTIALLY and saves money because the cover is the most expensive part of the diaper.
Some people absolutely loathe g's, but I LOVE them. I was told not to get them (by mama's on here), but I had to get a few for DH because he doesn't do poop. Lol. So I needed the option for the disposable inserts so he could just drop the poo in the toilet. I didn't try cloth diapering my DD until she was 4 weeks old (once she'd hit 9 pounds). It's been a week now and I've SEVERELY increased my gDiaper stash. I have Alva's, BumGenius', SunBaby's, and a few other (random) brands. I tried each and every brand. NONE of them fit her well. She had a massive blowout almost every time she wore a SunBaby & she leaked almost every time she wore an Alva. They're both OS diapers, so I think that's really the culprit. But to me, there's no point in them being OS if they don't fit smaller babies properly.
She hasn't had any issues with the BumGenius diapers, BUT they're so big on her that she has to wear a size up in onsies to fit around the diaper...same goes for pants. Don't get me wrong...I love the fluff butt look, but they're just TOO bulky on her. The g's are very slim & trim. They fit her well. I've had a couple leaks...and by leaks I mean the cover got a little wet around the leg. Nothing major by any means. I didn't even notice the leaks until I did the diaper change.
I started with 7 gDiapers that I had intended for DH to use only. I paid $7.50 per complete diaper (cover, pouch, & cloth liner). In the past week, I've increased my gDiaper stash to 30 covers, 42 pouches, and 34 cloth liners (yes, I need more cloth, lol). They're literally ALL I use now. I only have TWO brand new diapers. The rest I bought used and paid no more than $7.50 per used diaper (well...except for the 2 gStyles that I had to have, but weren't sold anymore...).
I would suggest at least trying the gDiapers. I would NOT suggest getting the newborn bundle. You'd waste your money on that. They don't fit those long enough (unless you know your baby's going to be tiny). The size smalls begin fitting at 8 pounds. My daughter could've fit those at 2 weeks, lol. I would also suggest searching the gDiaper groups on FB. Join them & search for some good deals on size smalls. I'd suggest getting about 4 complete diapers with about 4 extra pouches & 4 extra cloths (if you plan to do cloth at all...if not, then just buy a small pack of disposable inserts or find someone selling a few). If you don't want to buy used (I had no problem with it), then I'd suggest checking diapers.com (http://www.diapers.com/subcat=Cloth-Diapers-115/Brand=gDiapers). They have pretty good deals...especially if you're a first time customer...you get 20% off and free shipping on orders over $35. But if you're looking to bundle with only 2 diapers (instead of the larger 6 diaper bundle), gDiapers will probably be your best bet (http://www.gdiapers.com/shop/getting-started/starter-bundle).
Let me know if you have anymore questions on the g's.
ETA: My suggestion of 4 g's with 4 extras is for trying them out to see if you like them. If you plan on full time cloth diapering with the g's, gDiapers' website suggests 6-8 complete g's. I don't want to do laundry every day, so I opted for more. I have WAY more than I need, though. Right now, I do laundry every 2-3 days and still don't run out of supplies...or even come close to it.
