DS will be 4 months old in a week. He has terrible TERRIBLE reflux. He's on the max dose of medication, and we thicken his bottles with rice cereal. It still doesn't help. He projectile vomits every single bottle, and sometimes he's still throwing up 2 hours after his bottle.
He's had tests done, there's nothing wrong with his stomach, just a bad case of GERD.
So, his pedi said to start him on baby food, now. I wasn't planning on starting for at least another two months, and starting at almost 4 months is making me a little nervous.
What would you guys do? Start him early and up the chance of allergies, his stomach hurting, etc. Or continue to wait?
no one is forcing you. it s your decision, but I have heard that baby with reflux are put on cereal earlier becaus e it helps. I dont know the truth in that since I never had a baby with reflux
Is there a way you can get a second opinion? If starting at 4 months makes you that uncomfortable (I don't blame ya,) then my suggestion would be to see what another Dr says.
and idk if it's the same as adding rice, but there's a special formula for babies with really bad reflux. It has cereal in it already.
I started both my girls on foods around that age.
Try fresh avocado. It's a great first food.
What ever you think is best for your baby. But i personally started my son on solids at 4 months it really helped with the reflux and he was a much happier baby. Of course it was just the rice cereal with formula being spoon fed to him but he never spit up much after i started him.
My kids had horrible reflux. I waited. Food didn't seem to help my oldest
TONS of women start at 4m or less and their kids are usually OK. Normally I'm a "wait until 6m" suggestor... but in your LO's case, I think trying would be better for him... all that reflux can't be good for his stomach either.
My doctor told me I could start solids at 4mo's. So I introduced one or two.. It can't hurt to try.
Quoting [Boats&Hoes]:" Is there a way you can get a second opinion? If starting at 4 months makes you that uncomfortable (I ... [snip!] ... if it's the same as adding rice, but there's a special formula for babies with really bad reflux. It has cereal in it already."
He tried that cereal, Enfamil AR? It didn't help. He's on Nutramigen with cereal now.
He's already on cereal, so starting him on food isn't going to do anything worse to his stomach. I would at least try and see if it helps, you can always stop.
If it's that bad eventually he will have "failure to thrive" from yaking so much. Have you tried the already thickened formula? Like Similac Sensitive RS?
I'd absolutely introduce him to solids. One type per week and it's best to start on the "orange or yellow" foods such as squash or carrots.
My LO had bad GERD too. Once we started the baby food, it was a ton better.
My baby also had the same problem. We had the test done and her tummy was fine her pedi recommended I add rice to her formula (1-2tspn) but she continue to vomit so I decreased the formula amount by an ounce and added a ounce of rice cereal and it worked wonders! She will be four months on the 13th so I think your baby will be fine but when in doubt get a second opinion. GOOD LUCK MOMMY :)
