Middle School Students Denied School Lunch

April 5, 2013 at 8:04AM by Zoe Bain | 93 Comment

6276704367_9e77b563bf_n.jpgMuch to the outrage of parents, some students at a Massachusetts middle school this week were denied lunch. The 25 kids in question weren't allowed to eat because they couldn't afford to pay.
According to the Associated Press, students who couldn't pay or who were behind on their pre-paid accounts were flat out denied lunch by an employee of the district's lunch supplier. Some students cried and others were forced to throw their perfectly good food in the garbage when it was determined that they couldn't pay.

The responsible official, working for Whitsons Culinary Group of Islandia, N.Y., was placed on administrative leave after the incident. Superintendent Pia Durkin has since promised that, "There is no way any child in my district will ever go hungry. Children need to eat." A spokesperson for Whitsons Culinary Group also admitted that the situation was handled poorly and issued an apology to parents and students.

When students are unable to pay for lunch they should be offered a cheese sandwich and milk. However, the official in charge didn't follow these regulations. There doesn't seem to be an explanation for why school employees who could have sorted out the issue weren't alerted to the problem during lunch.
One boy saw a girl behind him begin to cry after being told to discard her food. His mother, Jen Ingemi says he offered to share. Other parents were infuriated by the incident. Father John Greaves stated that while, "there are people in prison who are getting meals, my daughter, an honor student, is going hungry."
How do you think the school should have handled this incident?

I think this employee, who has no compassion for a hungry child, should be fired. Sure, it is the parent's responsibility to make sure their children are fed, but lets face it, some parents don't.

So they had them throw it in the fucking garbage and had it go to waste anyway? What in the total absolute fuck. This is infuriating.

The employee should be suspended at the very least. How could she possible think what she was doing was okay? :?

i think its wrong to make them throw away food they were already given. With that being said, I got behind with my sons account (i was told he had free lunch, he didnt) and i got a call from the lunch department and they did feed him that day, and i sent a check. it is the parents responsibility to pay if they dont have free lunch.

Wtf. I would be OUTRAGED too. If she's going to throw away perfectly good food, why not just let the kids have it? I'd fire her.

That's ridiculous. You don't punish the kid because their parent didn't give them lunch money. :?

She definitely needs to be fired. How the fuck could they thinkbthat throwing away food was a good idea? They couldn't just charge a lunch? When I was in school you could charge up to a week's woryh of lunches and then were offered a pbj.

There was a big to do recently, where a woman WAS fired for letting kids eat for free, when they couldn't pay.

I agree that it is the responsibility of the parent. BUT, on the flip side, this is a tax payer funded school. Feed the kid. The government has the burden to feed prisoners, but they're all hot and bothered because they had to feed a child? That makes no sense to me.

I agree that it wasn't right what she did! However, I certainly don't like the fathers response. He should have been paying for her to eat. And again..what she did wasn't right and should be fired..in my opinion. Especially since she knew the regulations.

That's sad. I bet she'd do again in a heart beat, though. Surely, she knew her job could be on the line, but the kids were more important.

Wow I would be absolutely livid. My son brings a lunch that I pack Monday through Thursday and then in Fridays (if he's kept his room clean all week) he gets to buy lunch school lunch because its pizza on Fridays. One Friday he lost his lunch money so he had no lunch money. He was allowed to get his lunch like usual and came home with a note saying we owed for his lunch that day. If they had denied him food for the entire day I would have absolutely lost my shit! Not only is it completely unreasonable to expect a child to go a whole school day without eating, it's also just cruel and humiliating to single them out like that. How awful.
