She wasn't following policy though, she was supposed to offer them a sandwich and milk if they couldn't pay. She just refused to let them eat at all and made a bunch of kids throw their trays away. It's fucked up.

This is sick. I could never deny a hungry child a meal, no matter what line of work I was in. If I was working in a school cafeteria, and actually had to SEE the child, there is no way in hell that I would be able to say "nope, no food for you, you can't afford it, throw it away." I always try to teach my step children to not be wasteful, and NOT throw food away because there are hungry kids out there who don't know where their next meal is coming from. For an adult to encourage such wasteful behavior is beyond me... not to mention that she made a Hungry child throw their food away. Sad.

I agree. My son was begging for dinner at 4:30 yesterday afternoon and it was cooking. I didn't want him to fill up on snacks, so I told him his tummy had to wait until dinner was finished! He always says "my tummy is begging for food" when he's really hungry (lol, it is really cute when he says it). So, just yesterday when he said that I reminded him to be patient and that some children will go to bed hungry tonight & to be thankful!

We were also put into a awkward position when we went to a natural spring north of where we live. We always pack a lot of drinks, snacks, sandwiches, etc. when we go to places like that or down to the beach. Well these kids saw our plethora of food and attached themselves to us. They were starving. One of the little girls told me that her family didn't bring them anything to eat or drink or to play with. I told her and her siblings they could play with my son's toys and we had plenty of food that they could eat with us. There were 4 of them. They inhaled everything I had. It traumatized me to see kids in that state of hunger. My son will remember that day, because he asked a lot of questions and I explained it to him. He was so sweet and said, well we have plenty of food, they can have some of ours anytime.

This makes me sick :(

regardless of it being the parents responsibility, the important thing here is a child going an entire school day with nothing to eat

My daughters school will do PB&J's but they will not have a child go hungry even if the lunch account deficient.

I would not be able to live with myself denying a kid food

Apparently, it happens a lot more than we think. So many kids are struggling with hunger, right along with adults. I could never ever imagine.

It pisses me off that we give money to other countries to help their people, but hwe have hungry and homeless people in America.

I think the students who already got their food should have told the employee to go F herself and eat the food anyway.

I don't know many middle schoolers that would do that....

Probably very few but I knew a few that had no issues challenging authority. At the very least those kids shoulds have refused to throw it away. I doubt they would have been suspended.

This.

I think that most adults would have, but most middle schoolers are either taught to obey authority, or would just be so flabbergasted in that situation that they'd have no clue what to do.

I'd have told her to fuck off, though. :D
