My husband and I are thinking about getting one or the other but we're not sure which.

We mostly want something that we can use to catch up on old shows.

Can I do either of these just through the TV or do we need something to stream these programs through?

You need something to stream them through, unless your Tv has WiFi.

You can do it just with the TV if you have an interactive TV that had apps on it or allows you to put apps on it. Otherwise you'll need to hook a computer to the tv to play it.

oh and we watch it on our tv because we have the computer and internet connected to it, and we also have a roku box in the bedroom so we can watch both on the tv in there

Yes a Wii will work.

I'd suggest netflix for watching Old(ish) shows. Hulu is great for watching certain shows that are current. Like I use it to stay caught up on Once Upon a Time and other shows.

I tend to use netflix more often though. Biggest plus side to Netflix, no commercials. Hulu has commercials.

Yea, I really hate the commercials on hulu. If there is a show that is on both of them, I will ALWAYS watch it on netflix instead, lol.
