*Do not quote* its part personal problem, part could actually turn into a debate so I am posting here.

My mom believes that if someone murders someone in cold blood, just out of plain evil, than if they pray to god for forgiveness, they still go to heaven.

Yes I am religious, Presbyterian actually. My mom is a nondenominational Christian. I think the basis for her views is that she cheated on my dad, prayed to god, begged my dad to forgive her and "made it all go away." Whenever I argue that it can't be true she says "Having an affair on your father is against the 10 commandments too. Does that mean that if I cheated, I would also be damned to hell no matter how much I prayed? If a murdered asks for forgiveness they go to heaven just the same as an adulterer would."

That just DOESN'T jive with me. I asked her if someone killed all your children would you still believe this? She said she would hope they go to hell.

My hand is stuck to my head at the end of the day from all the face palming I do when I talk to my mother. I just want to hear YOUR views. Religious or not have at this one. Throw me in the fire for being religious if you will. I have thick skin and big girl panties. :P

PS: my rebuttals are that if that's the case than anyone can do ANYTHING and pray about it and go to heaven. I asked what the point in hell was if as long as you say sorry to god, you still go to heaven?

I do believe that if they truly honestly repent and give themselves to God then yes they will go to heaven. But, and this is a big but, I don't think everyone is genuine and use it as a cop out to forget they did wrong. If that makes sense.

I dunno... I'm not religious but according to the Christian bible... if you ask for forgiveness from a priest, do your pence, then no matter what you did, you're forgiven and don't go to hell. *Shrugs*

At least that's what I was taught growing up. I was Roman Catholic.

Just makes me seriously wonder... What the f**k is the point if anyone can do anything, be sorry and stroll on up to heaven after they kick off. I have a meeting at the church tomorrow for wedding planning and I think I am gonna have him break it down for me and see if he can explain better. Dudes retiring this July and has been at it since he was 20, went to college for religion. I hope he knows bc I sure don't

According to many religions the only thing you cannot be forgiven for even if asking for forgiveness is denying God as your father.

My parent's sect of Christianity (Southern Baptist) teaches the same as your mother. That if someone murders and rapes and tortures all their life, and suddenly finds Jesus on their deathbed they'll go to Heaven. Yet if someone is wonderful and good all their lives, but isn't Christian, they'll go to Hell to suffer and burn for eternity. :( It doesn't make sense to me at all.

I'm Wiccan so I don't believe in Heaven/Hell, but I do believe in an afterlife and reincarnation. I think the soul is put on this earth to experience everything there is to experience and we will keep reincarnating until we do. The soul also attempts to learn lessons in each liftime. I think perhaps people being so evil are part of the learning process for the soul. It's horrible, but I believe that in order for the soul to reach the stage of enlightenment it needs to know all it can.

I hope that made sense. Lol. I just got off work and I'm exhausted. I may be talking out of my head. LOL!

Moses murdered a man and he was forgiven. There is sin that cannot be forgiven though. Suicide is one and sinning against the Holy Spirit is another. I am awful at explaining it though.

Well, supposedly god can see what is truly in your heart. Perhaps that's how people go to hell? I just still don't see why there are sins declared at all if people can still commit them and still be dandy if they say sorry. Like I'm a picky choosy religious person, you bet. I think alot of stuff in the bible is face palm worthy. If Sheila wants to have sex with Jenna. Have at it. If Mitch and mike want to get married go for it, I don't even see it as a sin. But if someone stabs me tomorrow and I die...I do see that as evil.

I am not religious. But is hope that if said sinner truly was sorry and asked forgiveness then they could go to heaven. I was always told that all sins were equal. No sin is worse then another. So the sin of adultery or murder is no worse then the everyday sin that everyone commits.

In my religion yes, but the repenting must be genuine.

How does that work? If you are raised Christian, decide to be an athiest a spell, and find religion again...does that mean it is unforgivable? That's me in a nutshell. I went from 13-19 not believing in ANY religion at all.

Ok...so...if they are truly sorry...heaven awaits. But if they killed someone and prayed for forgiveness but their hearts were still impure... That's how you end up going to hell then? The consensus is pretty much agreeing here. I don't like that but it makes sense to a degree. I just see so much murder and crimes and my mom and I have gone over it and over it and it just doesn't (didn't?) click in my head how they can be forgiven. My mind hopes they go to hell and probably will in spite of this discussion but I am a bitter vindictive person I guess

That is not unforgivable! In fact the Bible says that angels will be rejoicing when you come back :)
