i'd give her the option if the $30 in giftcard/gas is greater than what you would just flat out give her in cash

id give the gift card plus 10 bucks or something. Normally a date night babysitter is $20 i pay. But Id give her at least some cash, not just the card.

I'd offer her the gift card. If she doesn't want it, it's not like you're not going to give her the cash.

Certainly offer it as payment but let her know she could have the cash instead! Worth a shot :)

Just pay her cash. I would not have been happy to receive a gift card as payment for babysitting at any age.
I know that when I was 17 I babysat for money. I needed that money to pay for stuff like my car insurance, my lunch at school, gas in my car (which $5 buys like a gallon and a half, not helpful) and othe stuff. I worked for pay, not gift cards.

I think its ok to offer it as long as you have cash if she dosent want it.

I don't think I'd offer the gift certificate, it'd make me feel awkward. I can't imagine my boss at work offering me a gift certificate in lieu of my paycheck unless it was a visa gift card that you could use as cash, so I wouldn't do it for a babysitter either.

Also, even though at 17 I would have needed the cash, if I was offered a gift card as payment I would have felt obligated to accept it. And that would have sucked.

I think I would ask the babysitter in advance what he or she would prefer. Cash is always awesome b/c it can be spent anywhere, and the gift card you are putting on the table is only good at 1 place.

me personally i would have needed the cash but if someone offered me the card or cash i would have been embarrased to ask for the cash instead. like i would feel so awkward and id take the card and secretly be mad after.... lol but maybe thats just me. i voted offer her both

I think I'll just give her cash like normal. I can always do something else with the gc later since it doesn't expire. And I got into a small discussion about abortion with her mother on FB, and I don't want her thinking negatively of me, lol. Her mom works with my DH.
