BC pill as mood stabilizer? Bosco123 1 child; Oklahoma City, OK, United States 1531 posts

Do any of you take a birth control pills to help stabilize your mood? I was on the ortho tri cyclen lo for about 8 years (since I was 16), then I got pregnant on it after I got married. Since then (4 years ago) I haven't really been on anything (except the mini pill for a few months while breast feeding), and I've really noticed that I go through a lot of emotional changes/feelings and kind of feel like a wreck a lot of the time. I've been trying different things like excercise and diet to help, but it doesn't. I've been trying to figure out, on my own, what's changed to make me feel like I'm crazy when I've never really had this issue in the past. I just realized this weekend, that it may be due to not being on bc. Is this legitimate? Is it worth looking in to so it could hopefully help stabilize me and help me to feel like I'm not crazy? I've been scared to get on any thing because I tried ortho tri cyclen 2 years ago and a shit load of my hair fell out and it actually really did make me crazy/emotional the whole first month, and that scared me so bad that I stopped taking it after 3 months.

my 17yr old was actually prescribed bc pills to help regulate her mood but most of her instability was pms related (so only about 2wks out of the month). It has cut her mood swings during that pms time by about 50% . Mabe the pill you tried last was to strong since the lo dose one u took b4 didnt give u the same symptoms. My daughter is on lo lo-esteron fe

Yeah, I don't remember at all if I had any side effects when I first started th "lo" since it was so long ago. The PA said that ortho tri cyclen is still considered lo dose compared to other birth controls and prescribed it since I can get a $5 generic with it instead of the $30 "lo" one that doesn't come in a generic.

My old ob before I moved gave me free samples every year I went in for my check up, but my new ob here didn't offer them. Ugh. I just hate feeling like I'm a crazy person :(

some dr you have to ask for the samples cause they dont know what your insurance will or wont cover.
