the wound/burn/whatever it is actually looks pretty clean, so I would not be surprised if they were using them to treat the site.

Maggots are good for dead flesh but honestly I would go NUTS if I knew there were maggots on my body.

I can deal with bugs but maggots make me nauseated. If i had then growing in a would i would seriously freak the duck out

That's what I was leaning towards.. They probably had dead tissue causing them issues and without seriously harming and immobilising them permenantly with invasive surgery... They probably went the maggot route as a first try.
