Does anyone know if there are other options than anesthesia for your child when they get an MRI? TIA.

There has to be. When I was 10 they gave me some kinda medicine and I stayed awake for the whole thing. I was really scared. But I knew I couldn't move because of how important it was.

They didn't do that to me when I was a kid and had to get them..... Though I am sure they would have if I started panicking or something. (I got my first one when I was 5)

It was of his head/ neck but they are not fast like X-rays. Even I need to be sedated. All in all it took 1 hr from the time he went down ( I was there) to te time he woke up in recovery.

My last one was that long cause I kept flinching from anxiety ( I had no clue I moved)

I think it would depend on the age of the child and what they are having scanned. But they take a long time. I've had several MRIs done on my legs and they each took about 45-50 minutes. You can NOT move. They strapped my legs together and put a heavy blanket on me to hold me in place lol. I would think any child under 10 would probably need sedation to stay still that long.

ds had one at 7 months & they gave General anesthesia. His mri was an hour long. You could ask about twilight anesthesia since your lo is a little older

I hate MRI's I have to be sedated for them all the time now. Cause one time I had one I had a panic attack and started shaking and crying. They put me all the way out with the sedation now.

They should be able to give him sedation meds through a mask or an IV.

Yeah- they suck. But, they are not terrible. I always get nervous for these sort of things

My LO had one of her brain about a month ago. They sedated her with something that puts them in a natural sleeping stage and it didn't work because she kept waking up during the MRI so then they had to give her meds in the IV to knock her out good. Once the MRI started it took about 45 minutes. Good luck!
