My sister, my kids aunt, is 14. She has been asking to babysit the girls. I always thought she was too young. She is mature for her age, and she does watch our niece, a lot. I would never leave her over night with the girls alone, but do you think during the day is okay? Or still too young? Btw, my kids are 3 & 11 months.

I don't see why not. I was babysitting 2 kids around the same age when I was 12. Only for a couple of hours though.

Is she good with your kids when she's around? If so, then 14 is a good age to start. You can always start with a grocery trip or something then go for longer if she does well.

Hell ya she's old enough! Especially if she is mature and you trust her :)

My sitter was about the age when she started for us. Ive known her parents for a long time and shes a 'good' girl'.

I told her if she smokes (she doesnt) that she better do it out of the house and away from my kid, and that if she wants a boy over she needs to ask me first, or I will rat her out to her parents lol.

14 is a good age to start babysitting, especially if it's only for a couple of hours or so. If she's had a babysitting course, CPR training, first aid, etc(many hospitals offer those courses...I took one when I was 12), then it's a big reassurance for many parents.

My mom left me to watch my little sister at 10 years old. Now that I think back on it, I think she was f**king nuts!! I get paranoid about my mom watching the boys. lmao, so I know that theres no way I would let a 14 year old watch my kids. But, if you think she is responsible and you trust her (and wont panic the entire time your gone) than I say go for it.

I get super paranoid about people leaving kids in hot cars, leaving the door open and the child escaping, leaving the window open to far (we live in a second story apt. and my son likes to climb on the window sill), my kid choking, somehow getting ahold of a knife... etc. I worry about these things when DH is watching them while I run to the store really quickly. Needless to say I have trust issues when it comes to my kids. I dont think anyone can watch them as well as me. Im just saying, regardless of how "mature" or "resposible" the 14 year old is, I couldnt do it. And it really isnt about the age... I have a hard time letting my own mother watch my children. Its my problem, not theirs.

See if she can watch the kids while you're there getting stuff done first. That's what the family I use to babysit for did first.

I think it's fine! I was babysitting my nephew at that age, and was babysitting for other families long before that age. As long as shes responsible I think its fine! Maybe have a few "dress rehearsals" with your mom while your Mom is there but does NOTHING for the kids, or tells her how to do things, but is able to make sure she can handle it.

Thanks ladies! We did have my sister babysit the girls! We were gone for about 4 hours. We went to the mall and got some summer clothes for ourselves & the girls. Then went out to dinner. I txtd her a few times to make sure everhthing was fine. She did great. The girls were happy & had fun!
