My cousin just called and told me to check the newspaper. My name is in the paper for failure to appear at jury duty!!! I never got a letter! Will I be arrested? I'm kind of freaking out now.

I had jury duty about 7 months ago, but I was excused. That wouldn't be it would it? Being so long ago?

Omg!

It depends on the reason you were excused. A lot of times, they just push it back a few months or so and you have to go, or get another excuse from the Jury Clerk. But, they should have sent you a letter like they had done the last time. I would call the Jury Clerk and ask about it, let them know that you had been excused. Did you fill out a paper when you had it excused before?

Maybe someone has the same name as you.... :?

By "I was excused", do you mean the court was cancelled or you had a personal excuse?

Well in the US you have the right be heard in front of a "jury of your peers", so the gov't randomly "calls on" citizens to appear and hear different cases. Anything from misdemeanors and minor offenses to murder trials. You get a letter in the mail to appear and be part of the jury and it is required by law for you to show up.

When people are arrested they are found guilty or not by a jury. A group of people. So jury duty is when you're called to possibly sit for a trial.

How do they do it in Canada? lol. I honestly never thought about it before. . .

If you are accused of a crime in the US, you are allowed to ask for a Jury of your Peers to decide on whether you are innocent or guilty. You go to Court and both sides present evidence and in the end Jury decides Guilt or Innocence, then the Judge sentences you.

Non Felon Citizens who live within each Court district have a civic duty to be a Juror at different periods in time, if they are needed.

Well some younger people never know or hear about jury duty until they're called since some people never get summoned in their entire life, so if nobody they know has ever been called, they might not know.

I'm only 26 and I've been called three times already.

I never got a letter. I was excused because I don't live in the county I was summoned to. I went to the courthouse and everything.
