How old was your child when they started brushing their own teeth? Like, when you trusted them to do a GOOD job of it?
If they're not at that age yet, when do you plan on letting them?

Doesn't the AAP recommend kids being 8 years old to brush their own teeth? Or did I make that up?

Anyway, thanks!

my doctor and dentist both told me that when they can cut their own steak with a steak knife then they have the proper coordination to brush their own teeth, the age they gave me for this was between 8 and 10.

My son is 3.5 and does a good job. He knows to brush front, back, sides, and then use mouthwash.

8?! My 3 year old brushes her teeth by herself and does a pretty good job at it..sometimes I go back and brush them for her again afterwards but for the most part I think she gets them pretty clean by herself.. I remember brushing my own teeth at that age also. 8 seems really old to still have your parents brushing your teeth for you.

3 seems way too young IMO, but I guess all kids are different!

Cora was doing pretty good between age 3 and 4

Now she is 5 and I just have to do a check afterwards. Sometimes she slacks off a bit.

DS is 4 and can do it but he's too distracted and lazy to do a good job, so I brush afterwards.

I let my son who is almost 4 brush his own teeth then after he his done I go threw and spot clean with the brush. It makes him happy to at least do part of it.

DS will be 6 in like 2 1/2 months and I still totally have to brush his. We were letting him do it most of the time for a while until I realized that he definitely slacks off at it.
