The Duggars and their Finances.... shoes? Oh, and Vibram fin FroggysMommy 1 child; Golden, Colorado 27505 posts

Okay this may be an odd debate. But I promise I have a reason for it that I think is valid and I'm not passing judgment ;)

Okay so we all know the Duggar's. They are pretty well-off despite how many kids they have. They buy second-hand on just about everything. That's good too, I dont buy a lot of clothes second-hand but that's because I can buy it cheaper at Kohl's for new.

Anyways, I'm watching a show on my DVR and it said that the Duggar's typically buy used shoes. Now I get saving money, and I get that there are a lot of kids, but buying used shoes can really hurt your feet. My sister had severe feet problems growing up and her doctor insisted the importance of good shoes. It is crucial to have good shoes for our posture, bones, all sorts of stuff. The problem with used shoes is that we all walk differently and wear our shoes down differently. So if you wear shoes another person wore it can hurt your back, feet, and alignment because those shoes are not "aligned" for you. It's crucial to have shoes that don't have a fungus from another's foot in there. You CAN wash shoes, but for hygiene it is better to stick to your own, new shoes.

I was just thinking... if I had a family like that Id buy used too but I really think it's important to have new shoes. I am NOT a shoe whore, I don't like expensive, "nice" shoes. I never wear heels. I love my sneakers but I always buy good shoes on sale. I don't wear "cheap" shoes because of how it can affect your body, but I buy on sale so it's cheap in that sense. I just bought Lily shoes that were 35 marked down to 12 I think? So I save money but I don't scrimp on shoes when it comes to your feet because of how it can really affect your entire body.

So, maybe it's just me, but I think that the Duggar's should buy new shoes. I won't even sell Lily's shoes second-hand because I don't want to hurt a little kiddos feet. I have donated old shoes to shelter's because if a kid comes in the middle of the night with nothing, and the mother needs everything for her kid, at least they have SOMETHING but its best for our health to have new shoes. So with the money the Duggar's bring in, do you think they should get new shoes... is it important in your family for your kids not to wear used shoes? I get saving, but it seems like that is one area that for me personally, I would never want to "buy used and save the difference" or whatever their saying is.

So used shoes.... yay or nay?

How far is "too far" with buying used... would you think it was wrong for them to buy used underwear for the kids? Used yet sanitized house/body products like potty seats, maybe used silverware, used bottles, stuff like that which you typically buy used. Do you think some things should just be bought new?

On a related note but not with them... has anyone ever worn those finger shoes and liked them? I LOVE walking barefoot and I wonder if they are as comfy and worthwhile to buy!

I've bought used shoes for my kids before. Kids feet grow super fast so it's not like they'll be wearing them that long anyways but they also get new shoes too. And as far as underwear, bottles, yeah, I'd buy them brand new.

You have a lot of time on your hands to think of all this. :) lol

I would buy used. Not shoes because I just don't buy used shoes. I do get cheap ones though. I do wear heels but I never pay more that 10 or 15. Used clothes never either. I mean I bought a used nursing tank at a garage sale. ???

I would never buy a mattress used though. EVER. ... I can't think of what else I wouldn't buy. hmmm. Now I'm thinking.

Lol you said you'd buy used stuff but you said you wouldn't buy used clothes or shoes and that's what she was asking if you'd buy used or not.

I work for an orthotic and prosthetic company and they'd kill me if I bought used shoes for my kids.

My kids get their shoes from Stride Rite because they have built in support for their growing feet. It's very important to have the proper support for your feet no matter how fast you grow. ESPECIALLY as children when you're growing and changing all the time. You have to help shape and support your feet with good shoes.

I think if you have foot and back problems like myself I wouldn't so I wouldn't for DD either since it seems she has my bad back.
If I do buy used only the ones that look barely worn, my second hand store has some yucky smelling and looking ones.

But there are people without messed up bodies that may do fine with used shoes.

It's not that I wouldn't... it's just I never have. Clothes... okay, I have... now that I think about it. I bought used maternity clothes and my kids clothes... gosh, ALL of them were given to me. I totally can do used clothes and shoes for the kids because they really do grow fast. But for myself, I don't like to buy used shoes like old tennis shoes but maybe if I saw a nice heel. :/

Not all "used" shoes have been used enough to be worn in. I know for a fact I've donated several pairs of shoes I've only worn once or twice. I mean something ragged and obviously well well used, I wouldn't buy.

I think anything personal, so underwear, toilet seats, bottles, etc should be bought used. I know you can disinfect stuff but there are some thoughts you just can't get out of your head.

I have bought used shoes for my LO! But they are smaller sized and she wont be walking in them! But when she starts walking it is going to be brand new! We won't by under garments at a garage and as for bottles I have and I just buy new nipples!

This. I just find it extremely important to support those growing footsies and not start any problems with using improperly worn shoes. My ex walks on his tip toes in a way... his shoes are always horribly worn. I wear out the sides of my heels with the way I walk. My sister walks on the outside of her feet. My sister had major problems growing up and had to have special shoes and braces. I just can't buy used shoes... I'd flip but I understand some people have to.

And to the person saying I have a lot of time on my hands... lol well in the episode there was a blurb about how many used pair of shoes the duggars have bought and I just cringed... they are well-off and they buy a lot used but shoes and other personal items I just could never buy used. It just made me think about kids and shoes. Even today I went and bought Lily new shoes because she wore out her last ones. We buy a lot of shoes in our house and always look for good shoes on sale because we do wear them out so fast, damn back and feet problems, lol! I

I would never buy used shoes for two reasons: 1. The health issue. I already have Scoliosis and really don't need to be thrown any farther out of alignment, and 2. I have and irrational fear of foot fungus.

I believe most things are fine to buy used. Undergarments are a definite no... and things like baby bottles I probably wouldn't buy used unless it was from a friend, but I'm a legitimate germaphobe. If it goes in my mouth, on my feet, or touches my crotch then it's just not okay to buy secondhand.
