Elliptical - moving arm things or no? [JadeLee] 1 child; Minnesota 12190 posts

What are the moving arm things for? Am I supposed to push them?

I can never concentrate on two things at once so I avoid those, but I also do a bit of strength training too.

Do you use the moving arm things? I just feel like I look like an idiot and I don't know what I am doing when I am on those ones.

Isn't that the point of an elliptical? otherwise just do a treadmill.

No they have some at my gym without the moving arm things.

The personal trainer told me to use the ellipticals because of my bad back so it wouldn't be as hard on it. But I don't get the arm things. I tried and I couldn't focus lol.

I never use the moving ones. But an elliptical is lower impact so better then a treadmill.

That is what the personal trainer told me, to use the bikes (which didn't seem to do much unless I used them for a long time at a higher resistance) or the ellipticals.
My pelvis rotated out of place last summer and since then my back has been way worse than before.

I use them, that way it's a full body workout! It takes a little bit to get into a good rhythm though. And sometimes my feet get going faster than my arms so I have to let go. They can be sorta awkward.

I prefer not to use them, but like you, I do strength training along with my cardio so it's not a big deal.

Well that is what I found was the point, but I tried and I kept screwing up so I just continue strength training too.

I am very uncoordinated and easily distracted! I can't do two things at once... ever.

I just use free weights in my hands. Because I don't like the movement. But it is up to you. Some people like them and some don't. But I am a runner and on bad days I use an elliptical to be lower impact. After helping a lot of people get in shape it is all trial and error. What works for you might not work for someone else. :)
