Normally, all the kids in our neighborhood get along alright. Very few fights

We play everyday with the 3 and 2 year old who live next door

Today the 3 year old would not stop hitting and pushing Cora. And Cora is so sensitive that she was quite upset.

So the mom told the kid to knock it off a few times, gave him a time out, and took his toy away.

He still kept hitting/pushing Cora

The mother grabbed the boy and said to Cora "Here hunny, hit him back"

I was SHOCKED and appalled and going WTF?

my kid piped up before I could and said "It's not nice to hit, even if he hit me first" and she walked away

Such a proud mommy moment, but I wish it didn't have to happen at all.

When we were kids we were told if someone hit us then we should hit them back. So you can imagine the scrapes and fights we got into! It seemed to be an Irish mothers thing back then but it's all different now.

Thats difficult for me, idk what id do in that situation. I think that if there wasnt a mother around id want my daughter to stand up for hetself, especially against a boy. But theres always that fine line that could be crossed and the victim becomes a bully. But it certainly sounds like your daughter is a sweetheart. :-)

I love your DD's response. That's really sweet.

Personally, I'd want my DD to stick up for herself, especially if she's being picked on by a boy.

As a child I was told "if someone hits you first then you can defend yourself and hit them back".

We were raised that if someone hits you, you hit them back and defend yourself.

I tell Cora that if anyone hurts her or makes her feel uncomfortable, she needs to get me or an adult to handle it.

I don't want her to punch back, especially a non verbal 3 year old who likely thought he was playing

In that case totally agree with you. But I'll be damned if my kid is the one at school always getting beat up on. I went through that at school getting tortured and not allowed to stand up for myself. I don't want my kids feeling weak and helpless like that. I think if it is a continual thing that's been addressed already I'd be proud of my kid for finally clocking the little bastards.
