Woman being denied 5th kidney transplant D&D Taryn - Anya's mommy 2 kids; 1 angel baby; Toronto, Ontario 49462 posts

I just watched a video about a woman, who needs a 5th kidney transplant, and the doctors are denying it.

This is the video: http://on.aol.com/video/louisiana-woman-fighting-for-fifth-kidney-transplant-517767185?hp=1&playlist=127170&icid=maing-grid7%7Caim%7Cdl9%7Csec1_lnk3%26pLid%3D308336

Also an article on it: http://www.wafb.com/story/22139842/amy-hastings-mcgee-fighting-for-fifth-kidney-transplant

What are your thoughts on this?

This might sound cruel, but what makes anyone think the 5th one is not going to fail, is she going to keep getting kidney transplants over and over again?

I agree with the doctors. As bad and mean as this sounds, her body is wasting kidneys that can go to other people who need them. If anything, SHE should be denying them. If it ain't gonna work then it ain't gonna work.

Considering my uncle is waiting for his first, it annoys me that they've allowed her to have so many. Maybe cruel but there are so many people waiting for one chance. She's had 4.

I really thought I was going to get ripped a new one by everyone for feeling this way.

I don't know how to give my opinion on this. It's a doctor's duty to try their best to keep their patients alive at any cost but...at what point can you determine that you've tried everything?

If I were waiting for a kidney transplant, this would frustrate me.

But if I were a family member of hers, I would be pissed that they were denying her.

It can really go either way.

The thing I'm most concerned with is.. I mean..how can she keep getting them? I mean, yeah, she'll die without working kidneys, but fuck, is all of that surgery worth it? I would rather die at home than in a hospital bed.

I was hoping someone on here had a family member waiting for one, so I could see how they feel about this.

I have to agree. She's had the chance to have 4 different kidney transplants - 3 of which could have gone to other sick patients if the first one hadn't failed. I feel for her and her family, but what about all the other families that have lost a family member because they couldn't get a kidney, but this woman could? At some point, it's time to come off the waiting list. Other people are dying waiting for a first kidney, and this woman wants a fifth one. Like I said, I'm not without sympathy for her family but one has to consider all the other people that need a kidney and would actually benefit from a transplant. At this point, another kidney transplant would give her MAYBE a year or two, while it could give someone else a lifetime.

How do the waiting lists actually work? Is it a first-come-first-serve basis, or do they allow it based on need? Obviously, matching issues aside..

I imagine they'd bump someone up the list if they desperately needed a kidney and it was a guaranteed fix, unlike with this individual, but I guess that's too subjective to really determine. =/

:!: I can't believe they let her have 4 transplants they could have gone to someone and saved their life.

Even if I was a family member of the transplant patient, I'd feel the same way. Hindsight is 20/20, sure, but I am fairly certain my opinion would not change. Would I like for them to have transplant after transplant, hoping that one of them would work? Of course. Is that selfless? No. Its incredibly selfish and inconsiderate of others.

She is lucky she got more then one.
There are other people who haven't even gotten one when they need it.

the doctors are doing the right thing. i know its sad, but... why give her anymore and risk the chance when it could be given to someone who's body does not reject it and lives longer then they would without it.

Why does SHE get to have so many transplants when there are other people out there dying waiting for just one?

I *think* its first come first serve. I don't think its based on need or people wouldn't die waiting for organs. I could be very wrong though.

It is suppose to be based on need. I have a Dad who needs a Kidney, waiting for two years now. Like you I'm on the fence though, can see it from both sides.
