so baby is a week old, and my nipples are killing me. It hurts so bad when he latches, but after a few sucks the pain goes away. What the heck am I doing wrong?

Sounds pretty normal. Same happened to me with my daughter, she will be two weeks old tomorrow and it stopped hurting a couple days ago. It will stop hurting eventually, some people take longer.

Sounds like he is not getting enough areola in his mouth. I think they call it a shallow latch. DD did that a couple of times when we first started. God it hurt so bad. Make sure he opens his mouth nice and wide before you put him to your breast. I used to tickle DD's cheek until she opened up. Good luck. If all else fails, look for a lactation consultant or a La Leche League if you have them there. When my supply started getting rocky they both helped a lot. LLL was awesome for my confidence, it was nice to sit with women who didn't mind that I was still learning and had loads of questions. :) They allowed toddlers to come with mom and most of the toddlers were still nursing. :D
