Are white people racially oppressed? Dovahkiin 1 child; 1 angel baby; Kentucky 16776 posts

They marched on Washington to reclaim civil rights.

They complained of voter intimidation at the polls.

They called for ethnic studies programs to promote racial pride.

They are, some say, the new face of racial oppression in this nation -- and their faces are white.

"We went from being a privileged group to all of a sudden becoming whites, the new victims,'' says Charles Gallagher, a sociologist at La Salle University in Pennsylvania who researches white racial attitudes and was baffled to find that whites see themselves as a minority.

"You have this perception out there that whites are no longer in control or the majority. Whites are the new minority group."

Call it racial jujitsu: A growing number of white Americans are acting like a racially oppressed majority. They are adopting the language and protest tactics of an embattled minority group, scholars and commentators say.

They point to these signs of racial anxiety:

No, I do not believe that white people are racially oppressed. I believe that there are whites that are oppressed but it is more about their socioeconomic status than their race.

I definitely agree that the poor are being oppressed.

And to elaborate on my original post, I will say that I believe most of the people that are oppressed are oppressed because of their socioeconomic status regardless of race.

Ya'll are either slow readers, typing enormously long posts, or no one wants to talk about white people.

 No, we are not racially oppressed. Are we the majority still? No. For some white folks that means we are no longer superior, therefore we must be racially oppressed.

In a lot of places, probably not but in the south(in my experience in AL)there seems to be quite a bit of white oppression. Not only from social status but in the workplace, in public, & even with neighbor disputes it is all I ever see. You can't get into an arguement or debate with anyone who isn't white without being called racist & then the person saying that victimizing themselves as a minority when here, its pretty clean cut half & half. I don't blame any race as a whole but some of these people could use a reality check. Asian, black, white & hispanics alike.

I think so.

For Example:
My father has been turned down for promotions in the past because they had to give one to someone of a different race before he would be able to receive one, even though he had more experience than anyone else.

If you are a middle class or lower white man, you don't get shit in this world, imo.

I couldnt ride the school bus in Virginia because of all the bullying I would endure because I was white. :/

This happens with any "group" though, unfortunately. DH was a certified peace officer, however it was really hard to get into departments as he was a simple white dude. They were looking for women, or veterans, or whatever they needed quotas for for legal purposes. Very rarely were they looking for white men that were not also veterans.

I wasn't hired at a job and later found out that it was because they needed someone Hispanic because of some regulation. :?

But as a whole, no we are not oppressed. A lot of things aren't fair, but it's not oppression.

Good ol' middle school days. That happened to me too. I was one of the few white people there.

I've been bullied, beat up & cut because I was white at 7 different schools in my life. I was denied a promotion at work last year while pregnant because the new girl & her friend(hispanic & black)asked for it as well even though I was better qualified & had been there longer. I was a target for anyone & everyone that wanted to pick on a white person until I started getting violent with them for doing so.

I voted I don't know...

Here's why... I don't know if I can really jive with the term "oppressed".

But... I think for a white person to have racial "pride" it is quickly seen as bigotry, where as that doesn't seem to be the case for other races (to me anyway)

For example: If a black person yells out "Black Pride"- they may be seen as ghetto or trashy, but not necessarily racist, but if you flip that and have a white person yell out "White Pride", people automatically think Aryan Brotherhood, skinhead, racist redneck, yada yada...

And... I saw a commercial the other day for "BlackPeopleMeet.com", and I thought if that was "WhitePeopleMeet.com" that commercial would be off the air faster than anything due to complaints of racism, and people being offended.

I don't know if we are "oppressed", but there's definitely a double standard as far as being racially proud... I hope I worded that right..

This reminds me of a girl on BG asking why there's a Black Entertainment Television & not a White Entertainment Television. I told her because if I'm gonna be watching 'WET' I kinda expect it to be a porno
