We have a 13 year old female cat, she has been spayed since she was a kitten, not declawed but I clip her nails. Anyway, something happened to her when she was a kitten/young adult cat at a friends of DH while he wasn't home, he was living with someone with kids and they traumatized her. So needless to say, she doesn't like kids, has never warmed up to DS and they've been around each other since before DS could walk (he is 4.5 now). Well a friend of ours is taking her while we are out of town for 5 days and yesterday we all went into Petco to grab a couple things for her.....
Well, DH got the bright idea to go look at the adoptable cats/kittens. Of course, we fell in love with a 2.5 year old male, neutered, declawed and we spent some time with him in the meet and greet room. Absolutely loving, beautiful cat, did GREAT with DS...DS even picked him up and he didn't do a thing, just let him.
So right now, we're torn, because our resident cat has never had a companion cat, so we don't know if it would be a good idea...have no clue how she would react and it's not like we could go get him right away because our trip, which we don't leave until the 28th and we're back June 3rd.
WWYD? Should we just give up our hopes/thoughts of adopting him?
I've done a ton of research about introducing them, etc, but I'm just worried mostly because he is declawed (front paws) and our resident cat is not.
Have you ever adopted a younger, opposite sex cat with success?
I wanna cry just thinking about him alone in a kennel :( he is for real the sweetest cat I have ever met! Ugh!!! I hate feeling so conflicted and DH feels the same way about him :(
An older cat, especially female, is not likely to accept a new cat. The fact he is male could help, but I don't know if I would try it.
I have a 9 year old female. We've never had another cat, but we have watched friends dogs. Usually she stays away for the first couple days, hisses at them when she sees them, and comes around after a few days. She will stay away from the dog.
My moms cat is 8 and he HATES everyone. He is the grumpiest cat ever. Well my mom alway wanted an orange cat, so she adopted one and thought for sure miikka (mean cat) would hate him, which he did for a few days but now they're best friends lol I would of never thought that he would accept him!
