i have 1 pound of ground beef to defrost...i hit defrost on the microwave and it said 12 minutes! is that right?! seems excessive. i'm going to be browning it in a pan, does it really need to be in the microwave that long?

how long do you defrost it for?

I just defrost it in the microwave to get it a little soft on the outside. If I have to ill cook it while its still partially frozen. Takes a little longer but it'll be fine.

Sounds about right. We freeze ours in 2-lb chunks and when I hit the defrost it's like 18-19 minutes for 2 lbs.

i have a setting on mine and i hit 1 pound defrost and it does it for 3 mins. I never let it go the whole 3 mins though. I just do it till it feel kinda soft to touch but its still frozen on the inside. Ive never done it longer than 3 mins. It starts browning if i do.

Yeah, I just took it out after 2:30 minutes, and it was already almost all the way defrosted.

12 minutes would have been insane.

Thanks!

Are you cooking it right away?

My microwave always does that. If I want 2 mins, it does like 20, so I have to be careful.

I just run mine under warm/hot water or fill the sink with warm/hot water and defrost it that way.

If you're browning it anyway, you can do that from frozen. Put a little water in the bottom of the pan. Just scrape off what's browned with a fork, and keep turning it over. That's what I do. If I'm making a meatloaf or something where it's NOT going to be browned like that, I use the microwave.

I think that's been proven to be unsafe.

I think it's unsafe to use the warm/hot water, but using cool water is okay.

i hate doing it like that. I used to but it takes so dam long i find it browns way faster just to defrost it for a couple mins then put it in the pan rather than flipping and scraping every couple mins lol
