I'm watching a TV show about a couple considering having a baby and the woman is hiv positive. what is your opinion on this? should nothing stop a couple who want a baby? or is it selfish of them knowing their baby could be born positive? I'm really on the fence

With the help of doctors and medication, an hiv+ mother can go through pregnancy and delivery without transmitting the virus to the baby.

To me, I think its selfish in a way. What channel is it on?

If there's a chance the baby could have it I think that they shouldn't be allowed to but that's my opinion.

Shouldn't be allowed? With proper management, there's less than a 5% chance that the mother will pass the virus on to the baby.
There is a significantly larger possibility of passing on hereditary diseases to their children-such as schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder....should they also not be allowed to reproduce? Because to me, that's more selfish.

Quoting Smartass *Preggo!*:" That is not 100%. The baby can still be born with HIV."

Taking the proper precautions, the risk of that happening is VERY low.

Reminds me of that Ty Pennington guy. He refuses to have children because he has ADHD and doesn't want his kids to inherit it. I thought that was stupid, to be honest. I think that if they truly want a baby, they should have one. With proper prenatal care, I'm sure the baby would be born just fine.

I don't think it's selfish. If it were me personally I don't think it would stop me from TTC but I would also think very hard about adoption.
