What People Really Think About Working Moms

The Pew Research Center made headlines this week, with the release of a report showing that mothers are now breadwinners in fully 40 percent of American homes. The finding set off a storm of excited debate, even though, in truth, the

My kids are better off with me working. It would be nice to be a sahm but with my extra income my kids get to do a lot of fun things and have nice things, if I didn't work we would struggle and not be able to afford to do anything

Eta. My kids don't go to daycare my MIL watches them

Yes, children are 100% better off with a sahm than a daycare provider, but that's not always able to happen.

Some of us don't have the option to stay home. If I stayed home all day, we wouldn't have a roof over our head. My hubby is still in college, so I am the breadwinner. What works for one may not work for another.

I think it depends on the parent and the situation. If having a stay at home parent would reduce the family's income and make them struggle to get by or if the parent doesn't take good care of the child then no. But otherwise I definitely do think kids benefit from having a parent at home when it's possible

I completely agree. I have done both and thankfully I'm in the position to stay at home with them. I plan on finishing school and going back to work once they are in school.

I think whatever makes the parents happier is what's best. Not everyone is happy staying home all day every day.

Before a year, yes they are IMO. I personally couldnt leave my kids before then. I think they need the nurturing from mom and dad then. I wish my first was in a daycare setting or VPK earlier for the social interaction. once my second is 1-2 she will do daycare one or two days a week for a few hrs while im at the gym so she can have time with little ones her age.

That would depend on the parent.

I think it's better to have a stay at home parent of course, but at the same time I totally understand that there are parents out there that cant stay home. But I think whenever possible, that when a parent can stay home financially, they should.

Yes. I believe they are better off. That's why I stay home. I won't go back to work until my kids are out of elementary.

I think family happiness and stability is best for kids. If one parent staying home would cause financial hardship, it isn't best. Financial problems are one of the main arguments in a marriage/relationship. Also, if the parent isn't happy being at home and would be happier working, it is better for the family that the parent work.

If a family can be financially stable with a parent at home and that larent feels rewarded and happy to stay at home, great. If not, it's great too.
