Baby Charlotte is HERE!!!! Born today at 11:50 am, she is smaller than anyone expected at 7lbs 4oz, 19 inches long. My labor was surreal. I woke up with light, irregular contractions around 6am, had my hubby take our older daughter to daycare, and spent a couple of hours cleaning the house and finishing up my hospital bag. DH was home at 8:30, did some outdoor work, and then I decided at 9:30 I wanted to head towards the birth center. I didn't really think I was ready to go in, but I hated the 45 minute drive when I was in labor with my first and so I wanted to be closer this time. We stopped in town near the birth center and walked around a little then I decided to call my OBGYN office (inside the hospital/birth center complex) to let them know I would be coming in soon. Since I could still talk through my contractions with some effort, they asked I come to the office first to be checked, just to be sure it wasn't false labor. I wanted to eat something before things progressed too far, so we stopped for takeout at the diner. We left the diner to head to my OBGYN's office at 11:15. The minute I got in the waiting room, contractions got much closer together and more intense, and I could feel my cervix opening up - I hoped this meant I was at least beyond the 4 cm they wanted to to be at before admitting me.
When the OB came to get me to check my dilation, I could barely walk, and when they made me pee in a cup, my mucus plug came loose. I got checked by the OB and here is where the surreal part starts. She pulls her hand out and very sweetly and calmly says, "Well, you are fully dilated, so I'm going to have someone grab a wheelchair and we will get you in a room right away." My DH and I were stunned and both laughed, I think I said, "Seriously?!". They helped me get my pants on, got me in the wheelchair, ran me (literally) down a few halls to the birth center, got me in a room (the bed was still being made as I got wheeled in) and the OB said I could push on my next contraction. The first push broke my water, the second push, I pulled back my knees and Charlotte crowned, the 3rd got her head out and the fourth she was born! Just to sum up: I was at a diner 40 minutes before my girl was born, and I was in my room maybe 5 minutes before she was in my arms! Craziness. Not what I expected, and so happy I didn't have her in the parking lot!
She is so freakin' cute and perfectly healthy. She is nursing really well and I can't wait for her big sister to meet her tomorrow :)
