no epidural, ripping? K.J♥ Due November 4; 2 kids; Russellville, Kentucky 430 posts

Me and SO was discussing last night, rather or not I would be getting an epidural this time. With my DD, I was induced early and got an epidural too, and it wasn't really a rough time, but recovery was worse and took longer, I only had to have a few stitches, like 2 or 3. However, with my son I didn't get any pain medications. Not my choice, just wasn't time for it by the time I got to the hospital. Besides the pain from labor, it wasn't bad at all. I feel like as soon as he was out I felt fine and was up moving around as soon as they would allow it. No stitches needed with him.

So heres where im stuck, I didn't rip with him, even though he was bigger than my first. But people say that natural non-medicated birth lowers your chances of ripping. I want to do it without the epidural but im worried I will rip and don't want to feel that and the stitching.

Has anyone had natural non-medicated labor, and ripped? Do you even notice it with all the pain and contractions going on? And do that give you anything before they do the stitches? Just curious about it all, because I really want to do this one medicine-free also. TIA!

My daughter was unmedicated, not by choice but I dod rip with her. They stitched me up and used Lidocaine beforehand (no different than if you had received a cut and went to the ER for stitches).

Did you even notice the ripping when it happened?

I had an epidural and did not rip with DS.

I want not try for no epidural this time around, but I am scared of ripping and feeling everything.

DD was non-medicated and it was HELL. I had a 3rd degree tear and multiple tiny tears everywhere. I lost a lot of blood. I fainted for 3 days. It took me 12 weeks to stop bleeding lochia, I also re-tore and had to get more stitches at 4 weeks postpartum.

With DS I got an epi at 7-8cm. Labor was fast, only one stitch and I felt fine a week later and stopped bleeding after 2 weeks. I felt traumatized after my first that I swore I'd never have another baby

Uh, thank god. I probably wouldn't get an epidural anyways, and just take my chances on not ripping. But its relieving to hear that just in case. My biggest baby was 6 lb 5 oz at full term so maybe I wont rip this time either.

Idk how to answer that lol...did the pain increase as she was making her exit? Yes...and I had this feeling that I needed to get her out right. this. second. that I ddidn't have with my sons but as soon as she was out it just felt like an uncomfortable swelling. They stuck a frozen diaper on it right away. I wouldn't consider it being any worse than when my sons were born except that instead of pressure I felt pain and there was the feeling to get her out ASAP. Otherwise afterwards was all the same.

I cannot imagine that an epidural would increase your risk of tearing really.
I would assume people who choose natural methods are more educated on the ways to prevent tearing, i.e water birth, coconut oil, different birthing positions.

oh god, lol. how big was your first one? I was on a lot of different medication with my first, I was in the hospital at 34 weeks and they planned on keepin me and inducing me at 37 weeks but at 35 weeks and 4 days they had to go ahead and induce me. I have severe preeclampsia, so of course I was exhausted after being on magnesium for a week, so it was rough. But with my son I didn't have any medicine, and by the time I got to the hospital they broke my water asap and he was out in six minutes, no rips, and I was up as soon as they took my IV out, which was just fluids to keep me hydrated.

ya, I agree.
I think my doctor failed me the first time honestly. It all happened so fast that instead of stretching I RIPPED.
With my second I saw midwives and they were very cautious with pushing and the whole thing was amazing.
I can understand pushing to hard since you can't feel with an epi, but that's where the nurses/drs should step in.

I had no epidural with DD2 and ripped a little, just enough to need one stitch. He gave me a shot first that was supposed to numb me, but I really don't think it did SHIT. I felt the needle when he was stitching and it HURT. At least I only needed one. Maybe I'm immune to the numbing shot, whatever it was. But I felt every time the needle poked me. :(

Lol well I know that you feel the pain of them coming out, that was hell, i'll never forget that lol. I guess im just asking did you actually feel yourself ripping? but I get that its all kinda wrapped up together as far as pain goes.

idk either. I've just always heard that naturally you have less chances of ripping because you can feel yourself pushing as where with an epidural you can't feel yourself pushing so you push even harder. whereas with me, Im gonna be pushing hard as hell either way lol
