Quoting M walls:" If it's something I have an interest in I'll join in but if not I'll stay quiet. People assume I'm stuck up when I don't talk"

i usually just observe, esp if it's a crowd. big things, i just fade into the background and pray to go unnoticed..

I've always been pretty shy but lately I've been awkward as hell on top of it. Like, I don't even know what to say to people anymore. If someone tries to talk to me I either reply with random shit that has nothing to do w/ the topic, a way too long explanation of something usually unrelated as well or mumble incoherently hoping they'll just be like "ok..."and back off. Unless I'm drinking, I'm definitely the kind of weird wallflower in social situations.

I was always called "shy" when I was a kid, but I knew I wasn't really shy - I didn't know how to explain it, though. I just had a really hard time talking to most people. When I got older I was doing some research on Asperger's Syndrome (for completely unrelated reasons) and I stumbled onto the list of symptoms in women vs. men. It was like light went off. After lots and lots and LOTS of research and talking to the right people I found out I do, in fact have it. They don't call it that anymore - it's just lumped in with every other degree of autism, but it is what it is. The only people who know are my husband and one of my cousins. I don't tell anyone else because I feel like they're going to look at me like I'm nuts or try and convince me that I'm a hypochondriac.

Anyhow... Basically for me it's like I just don't know what to say to people. I usually just stay quiet because when I do talk people look at me like I'm crazy and I get told that I'm "weird" or "creepy". Most of the socializing I do is online because I feel like there's less pressure. I can take as much time as I need to figure out what I want to say. I'm just really awkward in person. I'm friendly (or I try to be) and I will reply if someone talks to me, but I'm just not very good at holding a conversation unless I really know the person.
