Animal abuse linked to sociopath THE Draco Malfoy 1 child; Tennessee 19885 posts

So we've all seen (mostly in horror movies, i don't know any off hand irl that i can name) where children who abuse animals turn into serial killers and sociopaths. Obviously animal abuse is NEVER okay but at what age do you consider a child old enough to know better? If someone does these things as a kid, does it make you question their future?

We got a dog when my son was 3 and he never hurt/abused him. So, I think even the littlest children often know better, as long as you teach them.

okay, so if they're taught and still do it?

I guess it depends on the Kid. Most Kids I think know pretty early on not to hurt People and Animals, but that's something that's taught to them as well. So it would depend on their upbringing. But if I see a Kid abusing an animal just to watch it suffer, yeah I get a little creeped and think about all the horror movies and tv shows I've watched that talk about animal abuse as a sign of something more.

My son is 3 years 9 months. Ive been beating my head against a wall for the last 4 months trying to get him to treat our dog nicely.

I dont think hes a sociopath or a serial killer in the making, I think he just doesnt understand how to treat an old dog.

Now if he was shoving her in the dryer and turning it on or putting her face in the bath tub....I may have concerns lol

I mean, little kids hurt animals without realizing it. They have to clearly know they are putting animals in pain for it to be messed up. I Do believe there is a link though.

that's what i mean though, what age do you consider it eyebrow raising? i don't think small kids hurting animals is a sign, because as you said, they don't fully understand what they're doing.

I would think no older than 5 (assuming we're not talk about kids with disabilities or SN). I don't think there's really a certain age before that, though, as all kids learn right from wrong at their own pace. I also don't think people that hurt animals would necessarily do that to a human, ether. Plenty of people think of humans as superior, and therefore see no harm in abuse (though, that's all subjective to a person-to-person basis).

But yes...I would question it. Watched too much dexter lol.

I do have to say, though, my nephew threw my step moms small dog down a flight of stairs (more than once :( ). He's 4, and it makes me think he's a really disturbed child. I love him, of course, but I wonder why...like how could someone do that...

lol...honestly, I dont.

My nephew use to put cats in laundry hanpers and trap them in boxes just to piss them off, and he was like 12. Hes a very successful 29 year old.....I dont relate the two.

This.

If they still do it then idk.
my ex was never a animal abuser as a kid or as a teenager. He was rough with his dogs but he had st. benards [sp] growing up. My ex seems to think that pets can be dumped [he has had a lot of animals that he couldnt care for anymore so he took them back.]. Last year, he hurt/killed [I have heard 2 different stories] his wife baby kitten because she looked at him when he/ she was talking. He does have bipolar and he is an abusive person to me and his wife.

This! My brother used to hit our dogs and hurt them when he was younger, I believe because he was told by my ex stepdad to hurt everyone and everything in this house [he was brainwashed]. Now he is soon to be 20 and doesnt do that anymore. He works 2 jobs. He just graduated HS.

i'll give you all a scenario

7/8 yr old kid, throws rocks on a turtle over and over, gets excited when the shell breaks. then proceeds to bury it alive.

Is that really abuse, though? That's kind of more like teasing...since the cat wasn't hurt. When I was little, I used to force my cat into doll clothes, which pissed him off. I even cut little holes for his ears on a doll hat once.
