so my one week old son has had a big problem with keeping his blood sugar up and gaining weight even though he is eating properly. he tends to puke up a lot of his food. :c i was doing some research on it and came across neonatal hypoglycemia. he has quite a few of the symptoms. i plan to talk to his dr about it tomo and see if we can test for it. tomo is his 4th dr app since leaving the hospital. :c any mamas have experience with this?

is he breastfed or formula fed? If formula maybe the kind you're using doesnt agree with him?

and if you dont mind me asking how do you know his blood sugars are low?

good luck tomorrow!

both. he cant really latch well due to his tongue being tied, so i pump, every two hours, but im not producing enough to keep his blood sugar at a "safe" level. so i have to supplement with formula. were trying soy formula now and a dr browns bottle at the drs request.

he was having trouble feeding in the hospital so they wanted him to see his pedi the day after we were released. they checked it because she was concerned and it was so low it wouldnt register on the machine and his weight dropped from 6 pounds 11 ounces to 6 pounds 6 ounces. :c that was friday, we went back on monday, and his weight was at 6 pounds 15 ounces and his blood sugar was 67. we went back today and he only gained 1 ounce when it should have been 2. also his blood sugar dropped to 44. i am feeding him every 2 hours at 1 and a half to 2 ounces every feeding, as the dr advised. :c

I think weight loss is normal for newborns (within reason of course).

My daughter will be 3 weeks old tomorrow, was born at 8lbs1oz and dropped down to 7-10 at her lowest. She's EBF and her pedi wasnt super concerned other than having us go in to check her weight twice a week. She's back up to 8lbs thank goodness.

I hope you get some helpful answers for your little guy!

yea, if its lower than 10 percent it is ok, if not its reason for concern. the drs had to explain this to me because he was born at 7 pounds 3 ounces and dropped down to 6 pounds 11 ounces before we left the hospital. so he dropped almost a whole pound in all but thankfully today he was at 7 pounds at least. but he is really tiny even at 7 pounds, preemie clothes are big on him.

oh wow, thats good she gained her weight back though.
and thank you soo much. im really hoping its nothing serious and we can correct it quickly.

his spit up issue were thinking may be reflux, as he has some serious hiccups, majority of the day. i just feel so bad because he is having so many issues. :c
