The window period is no sooner than 3 months after exposure, for more accurate results you should wait 6 months to get tested.

It depends on how soon in the disease process it is detected. Once it becomes full blown AIDS, the immune system is severely compromised and the chances of dying from an opportunistic infection increase greatly.

You can be HIV positive and it not develop into AIDS for years...

The question was how long after becoming infected would it take to show up on a test.

I remember in school for medical assisting it can live dormant for years... That was several years ago so not sure if they have come up with different information...
