Quoting BunnyGirl19:" They'll find it. It's in meconium, not fat stores where it would metabolize. Meanwhile, why are they drug testing your baby? We only do that if we have reason to suspect drug use."

Here they do it if something happens with no medical reason behind it (PROM, placental abruption, premature birth etc.) As well as randomly. There's really no rhyme or reason to it. A friend of mine was positive for THC at birth but they never tested the baby or contacted CPS. It's really kind of weird the way they go about that stuff here... :?

At the hospital I did clinicals at for OB they would only test the meconium if mom failed a drug test at anytime during pregnancy or if there were obvious signs of drug use.

Have you failed any tests during your pregnancy OP?

That would be even better. I would much rather see someone pregnant smoke weed before cigarettes.

I swear people don't think this shit through before they spout it off. Make it illegal for pregnant women to smoke. Okay, well what's the penalty, another kid in the system?jail? dumb. Not to mention the confusion from a cop going up to a fat woman smoking and saying "I'm gonna need to make sure you aren't pregnant,ma'am."

Just...dumb.

No, it wouldn't be nice at all to have those kinds of laws. Are you kidding me?

Why not? Because someone that has another life inside of them would god forbid have to go without harmful substances for 9 months.

Because it's not up to the government to make that choice for us, derp. What next? Women can't have soda? Processed foods? Forced to exercise? Jailtime for gaining too much weight? It sets precedence that a woman's body is not her own but property of the government during pregnancy, for one thing. LOTS of things are potentially harmful. Walking across the street, for one.

Unless you think the majority of women are too stupid to make their own decisions, laws like this would be a very, very, bad idea.

I dunno. I'm a libertarian for the sole fact that government interference rarely works out the way you hope it will. Laws upon laws upon laws isn't the answer.

Agreed, the government is involved way too much already. This is a free country and you can do what you want with your body. It's ok for late term abortions but not to smoke a little weed.. hmmm okay... As for smoking it, as long as you aren't smoking blunts or a lot I dont' see a huge problem with it. Yes smoke is bad but so is living in an urban area with all the vehicle pollution or factory areas... I know everyone has an opinion and that's fine i just don't understand why and how they think theirs is the right way.. Shit i don't think my thought is right for everyone but to me it is. I would way prefer MJ over manufactured pills, which the doctors are just oh so happy to give... Ahh i'm done, i'm not here to change any ones point of view:)

Exactly. Plus, smoking is a hard addiction to kick and it's not the same for any two people. Women need a lot of support and encouragement to quit, not the threat of punishment. all the money that would be used to make a law against cigs for pregnant women and enforcing that law would be put to much better use funding a comprehensive quit-smoking program.
