I don't think you're alone at all in just having the urge for no seemingly big reason. Sometimes I just want to do it to do it again... I haven't for 5 years, but it is so extremely hard sometimes, especially knowing I have x-acto blades for scrapbooking.

As crazy as it sounds, I actually like getting hurt on accident. When I broke my toe, I would mess with it off and on all day because I enjoyed the pain. I was sorta happy when I whacked my pinky toe on the table recently... I'm not sure if it's just stubbed really bad or broken. The bruise is nearly gone, but it still hurts to mess with, so I've been wiggling it a lot...

idk how accurate it was but i did a thing online that was supposed to tell you how far into a disorder you are. that was the highest i believe...

Wanting to start smoking again isn't constant either. it is trigger by a need for coping as well generally (or sometimes a time you associate with smoking, such as at a bar)...but it generally not constant either once you break the physical addiction...yet no one would argue (that I know of) that smoking isn't addictive.

It makes sense. In my research I can best describe it as a pent up anger and self loathing that you feel can only be resolved or let out by feeling pain or punishment. If I could suggest anything it would be to buy a shitload of no. 2 pencils and bite them as hard as you can when you're upset. Your teeth sink into them a little and then it's hard. You can feel the pressure from your jaw and that can be a big release. Almost like screaming. You can also snap them when you get the urge. Also note I'm not a doctor so this is just advice based on research.

Those work really well horizontally in the mouth pushed as far back as possible too. Sounds stupid but it really works well for me & my kids. Here is a better explanation... http://heartcurrents.com/worry-happy-hold-pencil-teeth/
I did it a LOT when I quit smoking as the oral aspect appealed to me & I thought it might help...

i could try that but not sure it would work. i tried the rubber band and it did nothing. it's like my body knows the difference and it's not good enough till i do the actual thing...

Smoking is generated by the euphoric high attained the first time it happened. The addiction forms when your brain craves that high, and gets worse when your body requires more of the same substance to attain the initial high. While people may use it as a coping mechanism, the chemical reaction to the brain and buildup, is what makes it an addiction.

The rubber band was useless for me until I started giving myself blood blisters... The visual result from self harm is apparently important to me.

It looks like you want help but you're not ready to obtain it. You've gotten a lot of suggestions but seem to brush them all off. Therapy and all of the suggestions given are going to be better than what you're doing now. So you need to figure out what your rock bottom is, and when you're going to do something about it.

i said i don't do it anymore. no offense but i don't need you getting all analytical. i posted this for opinions. not help. i'm just discussing it with people who have been there, which you obviously haven't so thanks for your suggestions and opinions but i don't need them.

I stated that I misunderstood the point of this thread. But cool, if you don't want the help of EVERYONE on here, make that more clear next time.

i didn't see that you said you misunderstood. again, i wasn't asking for help, i thought the OP was clear enough. i was just responding to others' comments.
